Driving Long Distance/Road Trips?

How many of you guys have had a good or bad experience with a long drive? When I say long, it has to be atleast a couple of hours. Are the seats comfortable? Gas mileage etc. Haven't been able to do this since Hawaii is not big enough for long distance road trips.

When I first picked up the car, I drove 2426 km in 4.5 days.

Longest drive was 787 km on one day (Berchtesgaden to Sopron and back).

I was very comfortable in the car even during a long drive.

Thats a long drive indeed. Was there a reason for such a long drive if you don't mind me asking?

I felt like really good palacsinta so I drove to Hungary? It was a great drive (you can see some pictures in my European Delivery article)

i just took my first long drive to Palm Springs this Memorial weekend. It took about 2 hours to get there. I loved the way the car performed, the ride was great, even though the trunk was fully loaded and I had 5 people in it including myself. Although the 3 girls in the back did start complaining about the comfort. And I agree that the back should not be used by more than two. I offered to drive cause I love driving the my car so much, and it would have been my first long drive.

Oh, sorry. We Austrians call them palatschinken but it is similar to a crepe.

Can be filled with marmelade, chocolate, or nut fillings.

Worth the drive.

Always a good trip with 3 women in the back unless of course they are your wife, mother, and grandmother! I would agree 2 would be better.

I've driven down 6 hours to the coast and back up a week later. The car was excellent on the road...purr'd like a kitten, was comfortable, the aircon didn't miss a beat. I averaged 4.8l/100km's which is FANTASTIC fuel consumption from my diesel :-)

negative I think you offered to drive so you sould look cool in your BMW and possibly get into the pants of one or more of the girls sitting in the back.

If it was the dude riding shot gun's pants you wanted to get into that is okay also.

I recently had a great experience driving 5 hours straight during a road trip. They were mostly Autobahn miles and the seats were comfortable (non-sport). Unfortunately, I don't recall the gas mileage. The trip would have been much better if my passenger wasn't so dull. That is the only thing I could complain about.

I live in the NYC area. Last weekend I drove to Cleveland Ohio to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With all the construction on I-80 in Pennsylvania it took 9 hours to get there. On one leg of the trip I managed to get 27MPG. That was the best gas mileage I have gotten to date. The car had about 4500 miles on it when I started the trip. 2 days later I drove back home. I took about 6.5 hours. I stopped once to get gas and have a quick bite to eat. I was VERY comfortable in the car. It was a blast to drive I did not feel fatigued at all. I definitely do not regret getting this BMW at all. It was an awesome trip in an awesome ride!!! BTW I put about 900 miles on the car in less than 48 hours.

I did the almost 700km round trip from Melbourne down the world famous Great Ocean Road along the Victorian coastline to the Twelve Apostles and back home again (not the Ocean Road) in 1 day in March with my Canadian cousins.

It was a perfect weather day and lots of fun. No problems with comfort. My passengers felt comfortable and safe enogh to get some sleep on the way home that evening. Wonderful!!!

Did a 1300 mi RT over Memorial Day weekend to Vegas and enjoyed it immensly. Only problem was the dayum bumps on the unfinished bridge work (not the car's fault). Gas mileage was about 27 mpg doing about 83 mph with AC running.

My friend's butt did begin to hurt a bit though due to the Sport seats, but it didn't bother me. Never once felt tired while driving.

The best thing that my friend liked was how far you can recline the passenger seat. I didn't realize you can just about go completely horizontal.

On the 16th of June which is a Friday, I plan on driving from San Jose CA, to
Chicago IL. The total drive is 2170 miles and I plan on being in Chicago on
Sunday the 18th.

I did a 6 hour drive on memorial w/end driving down to San Diego with
the family (close to 600 miles each way) to see how it is. Car felt great, seats
were very comfortable (non sport pkg) and the average consumption with AC
on was about 28 mpg. The only bad thing were the holes in 101 which caused
me a bent front right rim.

When I did performance center delivery we drove nearly 1000 miles (2 adults and 1 seven year old) very comfortably. Longest drive was about 500 miles in one day and it was just fine. Tonight just returned from a 400+ mile weekend and also very comfortable. Terrific balance of road feel and comfort and given all the stuff I haul I'm really glad I have a wagon.

It was really fun blowing by someone who wouldn't politely let me in a lane for an unexpected detour - I think he was embarassed to have his girlfriend see him be both rude and then passed in his "sporty" Grand Am SE by a wagon with a family in it. He honked and flipped us off.

Honey it is very comfortable on your ass, if that is what you are worried about. I did 1500 miles in Europe in 5 days. On average 300miles a day. Not a big deal. I have seen people doing 600 to 700 miles a day easily.

These 101s, 680s, 880s, 237s. Dude, I cannot even imagine these are the freeways in USA. Are we really becoming a nation of second rated freeways.
Look at autobahn and compare, our freeways suck while Bush and buddies squander money in Iraq.

I was just wondering if there were any issues about driving long distances with the car. Sometimes the car is totally different when we spend more time than usual in it. I love taking road trips and hard to do on an island.
