Just Drove 128 Conv
My SA emailed me this morning to let me know he had a 128 conv for testing. I'm waiting for a 128 coupe, but I couldn't wait to get a feel for the car's power and ride.
I also want to add/clear-up a few questions that I've seen regarding the 128. EXTERIOR - Door handle lights are present. Wasn't sure if it was a premium pack or not, but they were there. - The "non M" wheel has a nice hefty feel and though it's not as thick as the "M" wheel, it still feels good. - Most of the interior parts including the seats are the same as the 3 series coupes. In fact, I ordered a sliver trimmed E-brake handle for a 3 series coupe and I compared it today. It's identical in size and shape and should fit nicely. - The 128 was parked next to a 135 coupe and the thing I was worried about most was how different the front ends, side skirts and rear apron would look. Proportionately, they are very similar. The 128 front end has about the same ground clearance as the 135. Overall, I love the look of the 128 front end. I do like the 135 kit a bit better, but I was not disappointed with how well the 128 front looks. As for the side skirts, I could barely tell the difference. They were both black, so that my be different for lighter colors. POWER I'm coming from an E36 4 banger (318ic) and the straight six in this car is PLENTY of power. I have driven a 328 convertible over a weekend, and the 128 convertible was much quicker. I guess a steel hardtop really slows the 3 down. I haven't driven a 135 yet, but after jumping a few stop lights in the 128 convertible (ideally the slowest of the 1ers) I'd be a little afraid to drop the hammer in a 135. Simply put, the 1 series cars (blown or not) are quick machines! I can hardly wait to get my mits on my 128 coupe. For my fellow 128 owners, you have NOTHING to regret, This little car is a rocket! In the closest comparisons, I don't think a Civic, S40, Mazda 3 or Impreza will come close to a 128. A 135, fuhgettaboutit! |

The 128i is supposed to do about 6.1 to 60. The 128i Conv a little slower due to weight. A Civic Si maxed out does 6.3 to 60.
6.1 seconds to 60 is very quick but not fast. |

It's all about Torque
While 6.1 to 60 may seem like it's not very fast, the reality is the 128 is laying down 200 ft/lbs of torque at only 2750 rpm while the Civic SI with sports tires is at 139ft/lbs @ 6100 rpm. Simply put, the 128 pulls much faster than a Civic SI at lower rpm.
Not sure why people always focus on horsepower when the measure of a car's acceleration os measured in torque. I guess what I was trying to relay is that the 128 is no slacker. This is a quick car. I really got a sense of how powerful this car was pulling away from a red light. As for the 135's 300ft/lbs of torque, that's just insane for a car this small. I think anyone who drives either 1 series will be really surprised with how fast these cars really are. |
