Exclamation Driving around in Germany/Autobahns (videos inside!)

Hi Guys,

I made some videos the other day. I thought some of you might enjoy what it is like to see the roads here in Germany. I made a home made camera mount. Sorry about all the wierd noises... that was my lens cap bouning around and a slighly loose cemera claps I think!?!?

On both autobahn runs I was driving with the windows Up and you can clearly hear how the windnoise increase when you go above 130 mph. I was bouncing off teh speed limiter the whole time.

Fränkische Schweiz I - Driving thru the small villages...

Fränkische Schweiz II - near Kathi Brau

Autobahn driving I (windoes UP and dring 155 mph on the 'Bahn! )

Autobahn driving II (Rrrrr darn trucks!)

Yea... I know that now. Funny when I was driving I did not hear it! The bolts I got from the hardware store were just a tad too short. Plus the wing nuts were too small for me to get a good torque/tighness onto. I have made corrections now. Plus I wil try using my small point and shoot camera instead of my big heavy digi dsl-like camera.

In case anyone is interested... I used two ladder hooks - to make my impromtu camera mount.

The autobahn video the windows are UP! And yea... the car gets REAL loud after 130mph up to 155mph. You notice it, esp from the sunroof area and rear window corners.

The frst two videos I had BOTH wondows down with the sunroof closed.

My camera picks up all sorts of noises that you normally do not hear that much. Like teh wind noise.. it is not THAT bad. It is loud... but not THAT loud.

I will make some new videos soon. I just wanted to give you guys a taste of drivng on the autobahn with no real speed limits! I am soooo spoiled over here! Btw... I blew thru half a tank of gas that day and only drove barely 200 kms. My gauge read 15 liters/100 kph - AVERAGE! I never thought I would buy two full tanks of gas in one day! Not until I bought this car! Once I even blew thru almost three tanks of fuel! lolol

Good lane discipline... increasingly rare to see that practiced over here. Thanks for posting the autobahn vids.

Nice vids - the vehicle appears to be very stable at top speed.

What were your impressions?

During Euro Delivery we got over 135 for a stretch on the A7 near Ulm. Pushing it to 155 would have been easy, but the engine was still very new. Finding a part of the Autobahn that is not under construction and not full of trucks is a challenge. I drive the A5 between Karlsruhe and Frankfurt frequently early on Sunday mornings. There is usually a chance to see what the rental will do.

Yes Ian, I everything on my car is stock. Only thing I have changed are some perf grills and dark window screen/tints.

I think the reason why my exhaust sounds louder if because almost evry day I drive WOT - when I can - on the autobahn. I mean why not?

The 135 is fairly stable at high speeds. But like I have said after 130 mph is gets a little bit skiddy. And espcially at 155 mph you can feel the car follow the pavement groves/tracks.

I know some of the German guys with a tune say they can hit 300 kph (186 mph) but I can not imagine driving THAT FAST in a 1er. Maybe 170-ish but not 186!!!

The scariest thing is that after 140 mph the hood starts to move around ALOT!!! I did not notice it at first until someone mentioned it over here. I think it was that guy who had a speed record in a 135i in the states. NV ?
The hood really starts to bouce around at high speeds. I think this is why the 3er has two hood latches with the 1er makes due with one.

All in all the 135i is a fast stable car. I just think that with better aerodynamics and a longer wheel base... it would perform better abpve 130 mph. But then that is what the 335i is for!!!!! lol

Nice vids! I'm from Luxemburg, so german highways are not far away for me!
You're absolutely right, that the hood moves a lot, while driving over +200 kph! My former Subaru WRX had the same problem, at 200 kph!

I drove to Munich, 2 weeks ago, and after hundreds of km and some hours on the Autobahn, my stock exhaust was louder, in comparison when i only drive 50 km a day here at home!

Hi Guys,

I shot another video today - out on the autobahn A73. This time slightly less image res but with 60 fps instead of 30 fps. I thought that might give better results. But the image quality is worse - what do you guys think?

I am thinking of buying a cheap HD video cam or digi camera. Any sugestions and what image res should I look for? Any particular brands? I want something for under $200 I think.

Btw... here is todays video. The windows were UP the whole time and you can hear the turn signals only until 120 mph. After that it is all windnoise! When I give the thumbs UP - I have reached the 155 mph speed limiter.

Dackel, thanks for the great driving experience! Over here in the States, I'm limited to a thrill hitting 6k rpm in 3rd exiting onto the Interstate, so it was great to view your video. Is your 135i stock? It appears to accelerate easily to the 155 mph limit.

My car is bone stock except for some perfromance grills. lol

Yea... our little ones get up to speed quite well.

Btw.... here is one more grainy video. The big mountain is close to where I live. JOY is having an "unrstricted" autobahn in my back yard!

Damn I miss those roads.

You wouldn't believe how terrible the drivers in Cali are...I'd have to say the worst ever. Hate this place and I've only been here 3 months.

Btw guys... both of the last two videos were driven with the windows UP. The weather has been cool here recently. You can hear how after 120 mph the windnoise gets really loud-er.

Driving back home from Munich last night. Just thought I would share with you guys. Sorry for the crappy video quality - but I had to film AND drive at the same time!
