USB 3.0 stick in 1 series, does it work?

So today I went and bought a new USB stick to play my music from. I transferred all my music from the old USB stick onto the computer and then onto the new stick.

Car recognises all files and everything, but when I select a song it plays normal for 3-5 seconds then it sounds like I am holding the fast forward button.
EDIT: and the song is actually seeking through very quickly, just like fast-forwarding, but seemingly faster.

While this is happening, the track time display progresses as normal. Eventually the song moves onto the next song, but it still displays the same song playing with the time counter continuing to count normally.

Any ideas? Issue was present on all 5 tracks (out of +100) that I tried.

Do the same files work on a USB 2.0 drive?

Assuming the files worked on your old USB 2.0 drive; did you format the new stick? If so, what format?

USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 as per standard-
"SuperSpeed USB is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Devices interoperate with USB 2.0 platforms. Hosts support USB 2.0 legacy devices."

PeteA,

Files were transferred from old USB stick 2 days ago (they were all working) onto computer hard drive, then moved from computer onto the new stick today. Tried to play the same songs I was listening to the other day. No dice.

Ryan,

I just pulled it out of the packaging and started using it. I had considered the formatting of the drive, but came to the conclusion that if the formatting was wrong, the stick would not be able to be read at all, throwing an "unsupported USB device" message.

Will check what format it is anyway.

Needs to be FAT32 i thought, and its very unlikely a fresh one out of the box would be that now-a-days? Definitely worth a check there...

I have trouble with certain devices being able to read my USB3 stick when formatted in NTFS. This format is fastest but not the most supported. I'd recommend double checking if your stick is formatted in FAT or FAT32 which should work on the iDrive (does on mine).

Confirmed that it is FAT32 format.

Performed a windows "quick format", using the same settings and recopied the files. Files play properly on the computer from the stick, problem still exists in car.

Probably just doesn't like that brand of stick or your car is too old to accept usb 3.0 regardless of reverse compatibility.

It's a genuine Sandisk, so I'm hoping its not that, I am certainly leaning towards the latter.

What do you mean doesn't work? The device is not recognised by the car? Or it will play music, but with issues?

The USB/flash drive needs to be formatted as FAT32 --- exFAT- and NTFS-formated USB/flash drives won't work. Use a USB drive formatting tool (e.g. Hewlett-Packard's USB Disk Storage Format Tool, standalone edition - it's ancient) and you shouldn't have any problems.
A portable HDD may not work if the current draw is higher than the output of the car's USB socket.
A Patriot Supersonic Rage XT 64GB USB3.0 flash drive works without any issues.

USB 3.0 HDD will not work as the USB port does not have enough power
