Waterpump failed 11/15/14. Replacing today by dealer. Hopefully this one lasts 80k miles like the last one.

Mine just went today, 66000 KM. I had a coolant issue for a while and my mech finally was able to find the cause recently. Hot oil was leaking from a improper installed clamp onto my coolant line which cause it to bleed out coolant. During the summer I would go through a full refill every few weeks. Guess that killed the lifetime of my pump and now with the cold weather it finally gave out. I ordered the kit from getbmwparts.com but can I reuse the hose and clamp or should I order those as well? Thanks.

I would also order new clamps. I think most guys are reusing the hoses - bc they look to be a real PITA to replace. Watch the BavAuto video(s) to see what I mean.

2011 135i DCT with about 35,000 miles. Water pump started dying slowly over the weekend. Replaced under warranty.

yes that's correct. Also just had MAF, O2 sensor and DME replaced.
DME failed due to coolant from the failed water pump # 2

Something sounds fishy. I think you need to find a new mechanic.

Suggested Preventive Maintenance Interval?

New forum member here, and new owner of a 2009 135i. I did reply to the survey stating my April 2009 build with 55,000 mi has a fully functional original water pump. My question is... given that every other BMW I've owned required periodic replacement of the water pump and other cooling system parts to ensure reliability and avoid any collateral engine damage, what's the consensus on recommended intervals for our n54/n55 water pumps? These electric pumps are considerably more expensive, so premature replacement will be more painful, hence the greater need to find the "sweet spot" in terms of service life. Also, does anyone know whether these pumps can be rebuilt/refurbished instead of just discarded? Thanks for any insight.
Edit: To the OP: Any way to capture and summarize the vehicle age and/or mileage at failure as part of this survey?

IF I were you... I'd replace your water pump ASAP. By looking at this thread... the 2008 & 2009 cars don't go much past 50K miles. 2010's and later seem to go longer - but still need replacement before 80K. IF you don't want to be stuck somewhere with a $1,500 repair bill.... I'd buy a new water pump & thermostat for $500 and either DIY or have a shop replace it for you. Also change the coolant with BMW coolant.

I have not seen anyone replace a radiator or hoses - yet.

How many of you guys have been doing coolant flushes every 2 years? Wouldn't that make a difference in the service life of the cooling system?

Do mine every three years or 50,000kms whichever comes first. BMW told me every four years is recommended.

The question lies in what is the manner of failure of the electric waterpump...

If it is an electronics failure (motor, motor drive, controls, etc.) I dont see how coolant can be helpful. If it is a manner of some internal issue (corrosion, lubricity-related problems, etc), coolant could perhaps help.

If it is other materials failures, like plastic parts breaking, impellers cracking, etc., then it is probably a time and temperature-related issue from fairly high coolant temperatures...

Only one of these is solved by coolant replacement...

Just had the pump replaced in my 08 with 62,000 miles. Tech said it still had 80% flow rate and would maybe last a year or more. Just didn't trust it anymore.

Cool Elec Water Pump Info

Have a 2010 135i (production date 11/09) , just had replaced due to engine code warning of engine overheat (yellow) then a week later (red) where it shut down engine (dead petal) . BMW dealer replaced at no charge as car was CPO - so $50 deductible, fixed same day, no more issues so far. Dealer said they replaced as a precaution as the ECU could not communicate with pump. Was told this is a new /upgraded pump from what I had.
