Coated Vs. Non-Coated Downpipes

I was just wondering if there are any major differences between the RR Coated and non-coated downpipes?

I would only assume that the main reason for getting coated is for protection from rocks chipping it?

Coated dps = waste of money for buyer, extra $$$ for seller. IMHO.

Depends what the coating is. If it is ceramic, it is all about heat reduction. With that said, I don't see this as a major issue on the 135i. I debated long whether to JetHot (http://www.jet-hot.com/) coat my Supersprint headers on the M5, there I think it makes more sense given the increase in temps (and it is a V8 engine afterall) despite a $400 charge. In the 135i application I wouldn't bother.

No coating. Someone somewhere was talking about that coating beginning to chip.

A ton of the coating gets scraped off during the install anyways. Why bother?

OK, we need to be clear - is this true ceramic coating or just a paint job with some thermal heat reducing paint? If the latter, don't even bother. Only the former provides meaningful reduction in operatng temps (which may be a good thing as the engine is really crammed in the little space there is under the hood.

According to the Riss Racing site they are coated in "Stealth Ceramic" which I assume just means black ceramic.

I believe that us referring to that fact that it is a matte black ceramic coating, but I'm sure that anthony or adam can give you more info.

They have a forum for customer questions at rissracing.net

Our ceramic coating is a TRUE ceramic coating - we send our pipes out to a company that does NOTHING but ceramic coatings.... Helps reduce underhood temps a bit. YOu wont have any issues with rock chips, as downpipes are 90% covered/protected.

Guys, a good coat on down pipes involves much more than protection from rocks or anything...

It involves keeping temperture down significantly. In our case since the DP's are under the car don't make a big difference but on cars wich the DPs annd manifold are exposed on the engine bay this involves a significant drop in temperture.

Also I've read since the tempertures are kept contained inside the part itself this help in produce more HP.

Please take a look at jet-hot.com witch they concentrate on coatings only both for every day driven cars and racing applications as well.

I had my cp-e pipes ceramic coated; however, there are mixed reviews on whether having this done is a good thing or a bad thing.

A close friend of mine (who is near-genius, in my book) recently sent over an article regarding these types of coatings and when they are and are not useful. The jury is still out on downpipes; however, they did argue that this *may* be detrimental to perform. Reason being: keeping the heat in the pipes means longer cooling times. If the pipes are able to cool faster, the air gets denser along the way. By keeping the heat IN, it has an opposite affect.

I have no regrets having mine done, but it's really hard to say whether I'm seeing any gains (or losses) through doing so.
