Battery cable connector recall

I'm assuming that this applies to 2011/2012 1Ms as well?

Quote:
SUMMARY:

BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011.

The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.

CONSEQUENCE:
If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

I have a checkup scheduled w/ the dealer next week (they gave me a free multi-point inspection for the 1 year anniversary of the 1M) and will see if this is something they can do at the same time.

does this affect the 1M? cause the press release doesn't list the 1M as one of the problem cars.

"BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; "

Yes, I assume that it covers the 1M.

I sent an email to my SA for clarification. Mine was an October 2011 build so, let's see.

Mine was built 8/11 according to realoem.

Does anyone know of a way we can check to confirm if we have the updated battery cable?

Guys I think everyone is gonna have to sit tight until next month(March) when the dealers start to get the parts(kits) and training they need to perform this recall.

According to this 1M is not included:

I believe the 1M/M3 battery may be (at least partially) different than the rest so there is a chance that 1Ms are not subject to this risk and not included in the recall. We need official clarifications on this one anyway.

But why? Doesn't recall say up to 2012 models? All 1Ms are either 2011 or 2012 models regardless of market so if 1M is a part of that "1 series coupe" recall, all 1Ms should be included imo.

I am not sure. Like Dackelone said I think we should just sit tight until March until the notices start going out.

because it says "manufactured December 2007 through July 2011" so ANY 2012 manufactured AFTER July 2011 wouldnt be subject to a recall.

However, as Luca335 stated, this (http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...b-b0aa031e8e7f ) suggests that M3s and 1Ms arent included in the recall.

#2- they can't do a recall on your vehicle without it being authorized.
#3- they can't do a recall on your vehicle without THE PART.

if you get a notice in the mail... then call the dealer... otherwise... don't call them.. they'll call YOU..

"The battery cable supplying power to the fuse box has a terminal that can wear out over time, particularly due to road vibrations, BMW said. About 504,545 models of the 2008-2012 1-Series, 2007-2011 3-Series and 2009-2011 Z4 are affected in the U.S.

An additional 33,000 BMW models are being recalled in South Africa, where a significant percentage of 3-Series models are built and exported to the U.S. The 1M and M3 models are not included."
