Windshield chip

Yesterday coming home from work a stone hit my windshield leaving a small "star".

Anyone have these fixed? I would rather have it fixed than the windshield replaced but only if it looks ok.

In my experience, "having it fixed" wont change how it looks. It will just prevent it from spreading and turning into a crack.

In most states your comprehensive insurance covers this(entire windshield replacement). And in most states its a zero deductible and can not count against your driving record.

Indeed.

That being said, get it done at the dealer or a good BMW indy shop. Windshields are incredibly important for rust prevention, structural rigidity, and safety. The replacement proceedure, especially for ours, is not some slap dash Safelight job. You must get BMW glass/gasket/sealant for it to be done right.

Yes I have full glass coverage.
I had one done on my TL and it didn't seat correctly and leaked.
They did come out and replace it and then it worked fine, then I sold the car.

I had a windshield chip recently, actually 4th one between 2 BMW's. I think BMW glass is relatively thin. With that said, I've used Safelite each time and always had good results.

My wife had one fixed on her Corolla. Not invisible, not bad. When you look at everything that can go bad with a complete replacement, it's definitely an option.

The requirements on your insurance company may not extend to a complete replacement for minor damage. In at least some cases, while minor repairs have no deductible, complete replacement does.

If its a small star you can get it filled in with that Gel stuff. My family has had it done on various cars and honestly i couldn't really tell where it was fixed. Certainly worth giving it a shot over just replacing the windshield right away.

Since its such a small chip I'll give the gel stuff a shot rather than get involved in all the risk of replacing the windshield.

If it looks bad or I get more rocks kicked up at my windshield then I'll resort to a dealer replacement.

They are supposed to do it Thursday.

Never had a windshield just repaired, I always thought you would still see the chip or crack. I always opt for a brand new windshield and I always ask for an OEM replacement as well.

Never had the "gel fill" work for me. It always comes out or fails and the crack gets bigger. You can always see the repair too. Garbage option IMO, better option if it's a small crack/chip would be to pony up or whack on it until it fails. Your choice.

Had my windshield replaced with an OEM replacement this last time instead and cant be happier.

Lot's of "small star" stone chips over the years - usually early springtime.
BMWs seem particularly susceptible to them ( I had 2 on my Z4 and have had 3 so far on the 2008 1er). All were between a dime and a quarter in diameter and all were fixed ($80 a pop) without replacing the windshield. There always a little telltale pinprick spot where the center of the star was, but generally the repair is imperceptible. I've been lucky insofar as the chip has never been in the direct line of driver vision.

Yeah this one is not in my line of vision, Its a few inches below the rear-view mirror.
I'll give it a shot. if it doesn't work I'll get a replacement.

It'll work fine if the star is LT the size of a quarter.
If you can't cover the entire spider star with a quarter, then it probably won't.
Good luck.

I have had two rock chips repaired free of charge. My insurance company paid for the repairs. I used two different companies for each one. Both used resin, but one did it more old school where he actually used a lighter to heat the resin from the inside of the windshield. I did NOT like that at all. The other guy I used was way more high tech using a UV light. Both came out the same, both have guarantee for life no yellowing of resin, both almost made the chip disappear completely. From the out side you can't notice the chips at all. From the inside you can see slightly where there was a chip, but you can only see it if you're looking for it. I would have the repair done. Once the original glass is out, that seal is never the same. With as big of a deal as the glass is on our cars is, I would not want to replace it unless I absolutely had to. Plus it is extremely more expensive to replace the glass correctly. The repair cost is around $80 and most insurance companies will cover that cost so you have nothing out of pocket. Insurance companies would much rather pay that than the $800+ it is to have our windshields replaced.

This nick is probably smaller than a dime.

Its hardly noticable but one time I had something like this and let it go and eventually became a crack the length of the entire windshield. We'll find out tomorrow.

I have had one chip repaired/filled that turned out great. You couldn't see it after the repair. I also had my windshield replaced on my 135. It was done thru my BMW dealer. They ordered in the BMW part and had a local windshield guy come to the BMW dealer and do the replacement there. Turned out perfect. Looked as good as new. No leaks or squeaks.
