road force balance vs regular balance
All,
I am getting new tires installed soon and I see some places offer road force balancing and some do not. Is this important for our cars? I have a 2009 128i and am installing 264 with stock 135 fitment. Thanks, Eric |

I road force balance my wheels and tires because it essentially can determine weather or not your wheels are bent, cracked...etc.
A static balance or anything else can't accurately determine that, and will just tell the owner to basically add a ton of weight. I track my car, so I want peace in mind knowing my wheels are all good. |

Single data point: I purchased a wheel/tire set from Tire Rack that was Hunter Road Force balanced prior to shipping. I installed them myself and have no apparent wheel vibration in the cabin. I would recommend it.

I had it done last time I bought tires. Car drove very smoothly at all speeds. Unfortunately I had to get a flat repair at a place that did not have a rf balancer, now I have vibration at certain speeds.

Here at Acura, we are required by Honda to check roadforce on all tire installs. It is surprising how many wheels/tires have excessive roadforce that will cause a vibration.
When you do a roadforce balance, you are just measuring the roadforce, not compensating for it. It can tell you if the tire was installed properly, or if there is a bent rim or a bent belt in the tire. You can really only adjust it if both the rim and the tire are out a bit, and you can match the high point of one to the low point of the other to cancel out the excessive roadforce. Had one today. Brand new steel wheels and winter tires. Checked roadforce, was at 15 kg (limit is 12.0 kg) Machine measured the total roadforce, then the rim roadforce. It tells you to mark the tire in one spot, and the rim in another, then rotate the tire so the marks line up (was about 160 degrees) Checked again, roadforce dropped to 3.0 kg. Smooth as glass. Pretty much every dealer shop uses it now. |
