I wonder if your CA was just kidding around? Mine's a 2010 135i with twin turbo. Can't imagine a mid-year change in the engine.

The N55 has less lag or at least no more lag than the N54 I have read as it is not your typical single turbo design...twin scroll. Plus the N55 has superior fuel economy to the N54.

Dealers are generally (mostly) idiots who just repeat what they've heard. There is so much bad information out there. Be careful. My dealer couldn't even tell me if my car has two cigarette lighter sockets (it doesn't) or what size wheels would be on the 17" option I ordered. I don't even think they knew that the car is supposed to be fueled with Shell gasoline, they just topped it up with Mobil 93.
I trust the service advisors , no the salesman. Anyway, this would be a big surprise to start putting N55 engines in 135i models mid-2010 cycle. I had no idea this engine was slated for this car at all until 2012 or beyond when the next 1-series comes to America. (If it comes to America, nothing is certain) Actually I could see BMW putting the N55 in the 2011 and 2012 E88 models if it is a direct replacement without re-engineering everything in the engine compartment. |

The MY2010 1 and 3 series will end production the last of February.
Cars delivered starting around the middle of April will be MY2011 and have the N55 engine.

If this happens, it is great. Less moving parts, means less chances of a mechanical failure. Same output, less maintenance. It is great. So we shall see.

All cars sold in the US have to have each body style/engine combination tested and approved. Approval is expensive, and it takes quite a few sales of that model to cover the approval costs. With the F20 body coming out a year later, and the low volume sales on the 1er, I would think it would be very much not cost effective to put the N55 in the E8x 1er.

The only possible way I see truth to this is if the new N55 achieves much better emission standards than the current N54. We know through our great Dem leadership now that emission cleanup is one of our savior's top agenda items. Not sure when these new emission laws / requirements are to be effective, but that is the only way I could see a potential mid-year shift and even then it is kinda grey.

Changes to the emissions laws phase in over decades, and models that are certified under the old laws are grandfathered in so it doesn't force the manufacturers to do anything crazy, like recertify an engine mid-cycle. I'll believe this car is getting an N55 when I see pictures of it. Salesmen are generally clueless when it comes to stuff like this. |

Its rare, but manufacture's sometimes make these changes mid model year.
I recall the 2005.5 Audi A4, they changed to a completly new body style mid MY, its not unheard of is all im saying. |

They did the same thing with the Passat. Maybe its just a Veedub thang. On second thought, Subaru messed with the current WRX as well.
