Turbo Failure?
I have 2009 135i with the dinan stage 2 software. I was getting on it a little today when I hear a metal type clunk noise. I got off the gas and I notice I don't have the normal power. I still hear a faint turbo whine but no kick in the butt power! The engine light soon came on after this and stayed on. I can still drive it but now it feels like a 128. Will be calling service dept. tomorrow.

Maybe thats what it is, I have been having the long cranks. But how fast can u go in limp mode? The car seemed pretty normal just no turbo boost.

Maybe that, or maybe a wastegate stuck open and leaks the boost.

Easy fix at the dealership if they have the part in. Pray for this.

Isn't a turbo catastrophic failure a pretty dramatic event? I seen this happen with larger diesel powerplants, and there is sometimes a engine fire involved....

Oh that was about 5 months back, it was literally a 2hr job at the dealership. They replaced the pipe and re-secured it to make sure it wouldn't happen again

If it's blown off the turbo side, don't drive it. You don't want any dirt getting in there. I've had turbo's go on 2 cars, an older Audi and a Mits turbo. in both cases, no sound, just NO power, and no turbo whine at all. Both had seized. That's a typical way in which they fail. Bearings go and the turbine shaft falls a bit and the turbines hit the housing, DONE. I've also had an IC hose blow off. In that case, there was a sound, a sort of odd "thump". It usually happens when your on it under big boost. The high pressure exploits the weak link, the clamp and it blows off. Power is severely reduced, but you still hear the turbo working. The worst failure is if a piece of the turbine snaps off, unlikely, but it can happen. It then sends a piece into the high pressure side and into the IC. That could cause a metallic sound, and the turbo could still be working, just with reduced power. Let's hope it's neither of the 2 failure scenarios, and it's just a hose of clamp. |

Even if the turbine broke into pieces, it couldn't send the pieces through the IC. Maybe if the oil feeder/line to the turbo bearings broke open and spilled oil onto the hot turbo, that could catch fire. During a hot run or under heavy load these things can get glowing hot. But, that would be an anomaly, not very likely. |

Well when I was taking my injen cai off to replace with my stock intake I noticed it was the turbo side hose that had come off so I reatached it. Whew that made me feel better seeing that. But now I don't know if it will start happening more often? Should I take the hose back off and take to dealer to see if they can replace something or will they just put the hose back on and say fixed? What do you guys think?

My SA replaced the whole hose and said something about more secure clamping, so you should probably book it in and see what they'll do about it.

Wondering if this is what is wrong with mine.
Did your engine sound louder and lower and make a ticking sound at idle? I have no power but not as bad as a HPFP failure.

I don't recall a ticking sound at idle. When I drove the car you could tell no turbos were kicking in but you could still hear them. It is a very easy to see if you take your air filter housing out. The big hose will be unattached underneath it. Good luck
