Dealer Falsified Paperwork
Hey you addicts,
I need some help please. Your opinions and advice is all I seek, not too tough a request for an internet forum, eh? And as a disclaimer here at the top...buying my 135 had my brain all screwed up. The excitement of the situation overcame all reasonable thought. Usually I am a calm collected character, but the anticipation of taking delivery of my 135 had me all screwey The dealer wrote in the sales paperwork (the legal documents that go to the DMV) that my car had 11 miles on the odometer when I purchased it. But, the vehicle had 100 miles on the odometer when I got into the car, 4 minutes after signing the DMV paperwork. Anyone know if this is illegal, or just unethical? How would you react to this? I have had a number of other problems with this purchase from this specific dealership. So, maybe I have a bit of a biased view. I am taking my 135 into the dealer for repairs on monday. This is because they allowed the transport company to wreck the bumper, and crack the right side view mirror. Which, hey stuff happens in shipping I understand. Although, the biggest problem I had was nobody @ the dealer inspected my vehicle prior to me taking delivery. So the damage was all there for me to see as I picked up my car. They will be replacing all those parts. Plus, I have already talked them into paying for the labor for an ipod interface install. But, I will have to give up my beloved 135 for 3 days while they perform the repairs. This is 2 weeks after taking delivery. Very crappy for a $43k car. What do you all think about my dealer doing the falsifying thing? Yes yes yes it is really all my fault for not bringing it up to the dealer at the time of purchase, but as I said earlier, it was the red mist man... -J

Same thing happened on a Jeep we bought. We signed for 60 miles on it or something. Then it had to be picked up 200 miles away which they never told us. So it was given to us with 260 miles on it.. and an empty fuel tank.. Did they have to pick up your car or was it there on the lot the whole time?

They had it picked up from a dealer in San Diego. It was shipped up here on a truck.

exactly, more than likely no one told the F&I guy the actual miles, he probably thought he was being safe with 11. This oversight would only really affect you if you were leasing the vehicle. In the greater scheme of things, not really a big deal.

What does a dealership have to gain?? Well i don't know about you guys but, for me, 100 miles on a car isn't exactly new. With 100 miles on the car, that could mean the dealer used it as a demo - in which case you would probably have people ripping the car that you just bought- or they told you that they would truck your car from another dealership but, drove it up (in which case, they probably made you pay for the "trucking" but, since they didn't "truck" your car, they made extra money off you). There are tons of things that could have happened to your car with 100 miles on it. When you agree to buy a new car, it should be as close to 0miles (new) as is reasonable, unless you accepted another condition.
does there need to be a PDI (pre-delivery inspection) on the car before it's delivered in the US? What does the reading on your part of the contract say? I am going to step out on a limb and say that your state must have laws to protect you from this kinda stuff. |

Protect him from from what? Unless he is leasing the vehicle, how has he been hurt from the paperwork showing 11 miles? Reading his post, it's not like he didn't know it had 100 miles or so, it was just wrong on the ODO statement |

Hey, at the very least, they should update it so all the paperwork matches. I would hope that if you had a major warranty problem at 100 miles past the mileage that they would help you out anyway, but better safe than sorry.

In my experience people either work at a dealer because they like cars or because they want to make money. Most dealers have more of the latter, in which case you get into stuff like this.

IIRC, a vehicle is "new" until it has been registered to an owner.

usually a discrepency on miles is to your advantage if its a lease. for ex if the dealer notes a car with 100 miles on the contract and yuore allowed 10k miles on 2 years then the car can be turned in with 20,100 miles. if in fact the car only has 10 miles on it the dealer has given you 90 extra miles. in your case i dont see why they would do that, probably would cite mistake?

The way I see it is, they messed up too!
So even though you missed this, just get them to give you free stuff till you feel it equals the mess up. And yes get it in writing what they actually did. And take it as a lesson for the next car. What else can you do? I would go over the car with a fine tooth comb though, and you might want to see if you can get anything else. BTW are you leasing? If yes, then no need for early oil changes, if no... maybe a few extra oil changes? Just to keep quiet about which dealership did the naughty? LOL EspressoBoy |

If you're asking who wants to drive it til you get your 1 back, I will. I wouldn't mind saving my own gas and having a fun ride in it til yours is back.
