So this is stuck to my windshield...
Just noticed it tonight. BMW PN 61.31-6 906 786
From what I can tell (from reading other humorous threads), it is a BMW pen holder AND IT IS STUCK TO MY WINDSHIELD. And here I was worried about putting holes in my bumper....

It holds a magnetic pen which is used in the PDI......it takes the car out of transport mode.......I think?

I was present when my 1M was unloaded off the truck and before the driver started the car he used the pen to turn the electrical system back on. If I understood correctly when being transported, for safety reasons, the car is totally dead electrically. There's a magnetic switch located inside the car on the dash. The pen is actually a magnet that allows the driver to reactivate everything by holding it over the actual switch. All these switches etc are supposed to be removed during prep for delivery. At least that's what was explained to me.

Some Achilles' heel you revealed here! I'll start stocking some magnets in the car so that at my next road race, I can throw these at my BMW opponent's lower windscreen section: winning!

That is a holder for the magnetic pen used while the vehicle is in transport.
there is a magnetic reed switch installed at the factory for export cars. this switch is wired into the power control module in the trunk. when the cars are on the boat, sitting at the port, and sitting at the dealer , and on transport trucks, the power is off to help perserve the battery. at PDI the cable / reed switch is removed, the car is taken out of transport mode, and all faults cleared etc etc etc etc etc ... i.e. New cars prior to PDI are usually lit up like christmas trees due to faults stored while shuffeling them around. that holder should have ben removed by dealer ( tisk tisk on their part) FYI.. that magnet in that pen is pretty good to use, all techs seemed to have "acquired" one or two... some people have even "acquired" that magnetic reed switch ( and an older style manual cut off switch )

I'm surprised BMW doesn't put the car in full sleep mode via SW or by pressing a special combination of switches. Why on earth we they use a mechanical pen and reed switch. Low tech ehh.

It was there for me at ED pick up, I swiped it and put it in my luggage at drop off. I guess I screwed the guys at the port or at PDI, oops

I had a rattle in my trunk for a couple of weeks till I found that reed switch loose under my trunk floor lid. They uninstalled it but left it in my trunk. The pen was also with my keys and manual.

Also, the risk of this happening by accident any time, however small, would be too great.

Well... what I was thinking is that it would be nice for anyone who stores their car(long term) for weeks on end(say in winter)... to power the entire car down with say holding down a few buttons on the dash(instead of using this magnetic pen and reed switch). I know Opel and MB models can do that(put the car into tranport mode and power the car's electrics down). There are all sorts of hidden menus/features on new cars these days. Dack |
