I’d roll my eyes at this thread too...
...so please bear with me.
I’ve always hated the “help me decide” threads especially when they are competing brands posted on only one brands forum. Well, here I am, a massive hypocrite. I recently sold my perfect 135is to get a 997. Well after some exhausting research that’s not the way I’m going to go. I did the research before I sold the 135is but obviously intensified when it was “game time” and I was truly in the market. I’m not the guy that thinks cars are investments but I love to find cars I’d love to own but will also depreciate at a very low rate (I did well on my 135, essentially breaking even). Well now I’m looking at cars all the way from the mid teens to $50k range and in between. They are as follows and would love this groups, as unbiased as possible thoughts, knowing full well im in a 1M forum but expect a more educated group here than others. -1M in the 40k mile range for a fair price and within current market (trying not to give away a car I’ve worked hard on negotiations and due diligence) *pluses: it’s a 1M and I’ve wanted one for awhile I know it works for my current life/family as it’s just like my 135is Long term value, possible appreciation *minuses:not the ultra new/different vibe since it’s so much like the car I sold The most expensive (I’ll be financing) -2004 Porsche C4S also mid 40k range and well priced (not certain on IMS) *pluses: I love the C4S/AWD (I have a daily Volvo wagon but still nice in Utah) Porsche itch is scratched These seem to be holding value really well *minuses: old interior is “eh” IMS Aussie likely needs addressing -2001 e46 M3 manual coupe 69k, all stock *pluses: so much fun and a great motor Very clean and low miles Really well priced and cheapest of all Long term value but don’t really know here *minues: needs some small interior trim details addressed Small body issue on pass quarter panel needs to be addressed How does the body work neg impact value long term... Such a great car but almost a let down to the above cars? Quick note, apologies for the formatting. On my phone away from a laptop So, even as I’m typing this I’m thinking “man, what a dumb thread...”. Would love any thoughts though as this is truly a struggle for me. |

I do not think you could go wrong with any of the listed choices, even though the driving and ownership experience would very different between all of them. I would base my decision on what sort of driving dynamics you are looking for, rather than the hope of long-term appreciation which is a moonshot at best.
For close to the same price as a used and warranty-less 1M, have you considered the M2? I haven't driven one so can't compare the dynamics but it would have to be considered as well at that pricepoint. A few people on rennlist either currently own or have owned 1Ms in the past. I came across a discussion by a couple of guys who had 1Ms, acquired a Cayman GT4, and are now getting the 991.2 GT3. The question asked was how do you best thin the fleet to accommodate the GT3? I found what one of the guys said very interesting: "I’d keep the 1M alongside the GT3 without question. Very different driving experiences, especially if you’re comfortable with traction control off in the 1M. I spent over 70k sideways miles in that hooligan, and while it’s far more flawed than the GT4 I confess to missing it more." |

The ideal reply. Thank you. I have considered the M2 but you may notice some similarities between the 3 I’m considering. M3 and C4S were cars I read about when I was a teen and always wanted. 1M sort of the same thing but a bit later in life. The 135is is/was fantastic but lacked some of the prestige these choices have (even though more limited then any of them). I’d love anymore feedback but this was a great reply, thanks again. |

Z4M is probably similar to the 1 in experience, if I had to guess. I gave up on the backseat since most cars that I’d consider with them aren’t very usable. Once I was more flexible, cars like Caymans, F-Types (very similar to Stingray and sounds awesome) and Corvettes started floating t the top of the list. I almost bought an F-Type S. It immediately reminded me of the Corvette. And the corvette dealer gave me a better deal.

I would definitely look at a 996TT long before I would consider a 997.1 4S

My suggestion would be to do what I did, if you are serious about a 996 TT; buy one with more miles on it, that has been well maintained. Mine has around 78K miles on it now, and the last 2 owners dumped around $25K into the car over the last 3 years. I paid $41K for it, with brand new tires and wheels, just this past May. I'm not saying that you can replicate the same deal that I got, but I would not think that you would need to spend more than $50K to get a good, well-sorted one, especially if you go above 50-60 thousand miles.

The worst thing about buying a used Porsche is having to deal with Porsche car owners.

The 1M is not the sort of balanced car as some of the others you reference. That being said that is kind of the point of the car. Capable yet angry, and at times unforgiving. Its a more capable 135is and aesthetically I personally think it looks awesome like no car before it let alone how it drives. But.... a 135iis is a very capable fun car. I would move on to something else. Life it to short.

Yeah, I have owned 24-25 cars at this point. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Am I the only one who thinks you made a mistake selling your 135is?

I had a 135i (2010) and moved up to the 1M. Night and day difference in looks and drivability. It's one of those cars you look back at after parking. I have had mine for a year now but have no plans to sell it. Working on my car is relatively easy and it's something I enjoy doing. If well maintained, it should last a good long time.

I would say I think there are a lot of similarities between the 1M, 135is and a E46 M3. All great cars. Only downside of the 1M is the low production numbers. It is more exciting than a 135is, for sure, and easy to live with as a daily driver.
My vote would be for a late model 911, just to have a different driving experience. As great as our BMWs are Porsche's are just at a different level in terms of fit and finish, and refinement. Further I would not have any worries beating on a 911, because they made lots of em, it's a modern car and it will take the abuse. Reality is in 2 or 3 years time your 911 will not have lost much value and you can still by a low mileage 1M with your proceeds. TJ |

LOL’d.
The Porsche “vibe” was talked about between myself and my boss, the VP of the company I work for. I head sales for a company and have a large number of people within my dept. What most at the company don’t know is that my wife and I own a local business as well that we do fairly well with and recently paid off and is driving this new purchase. The perception of my team seeing me in a Porsche was one of the reason I ended up going with the 1M. I’ll be adding pics soon when it’s delivered. Thanks for all the input. |
