on 1M vs 335is, the latter is 320hp and 332lb-ft whereas the 1M is 335 hp and 369 lb-ft, so thats 15 hp and 37lb-ft more - definitely not the "same" engine. its also 300+lbs lighter than the 335is. so it will be a good deal faster than the 335is. still not faster than the m3 if you are drag racing, but with 369 lb-ft, definitely quicker for everyday driving. and with better handling than the m3 (same suspension, less weight, shorter wheelbase), it will be faster on certain tracks too. I think thats what the review is trying to say.

^you can quote overboost numbers on the M and not on the IS...which also has overboost.
And peak numbers mean next to nothing, the integral of the power and torque curves means everything. |

and the 335is still doesn't have the M3/1M suspension. don't get me wrong, I like the 335is a lot, it just isnt the same performance/handling wise as a 1M, because of the common sense reasons I outlined above.

I have just read the full article in Autocar. If someone can scan it answers a few questions. Such as the 1m has a different inlet manifold and exhaust to the Z4s. Also it gives an interesting insight to what is clearly going to be a great car. Quicker in gear acceleration than M3 etc.

Not to beat a dead horse further, but regardless of intake, exhaust and possibly programming, it's unavoidable that this is not an M motor, simply the same lump from the 335is and Z4 35si.
Nothing wrong with that, the rest is clearly M derived. Hell, my M Coupe with the lame S52b32US is still my favorite car. |

Yes it's the full article. I get the mag delivered every week. 50-75mph m1 0.6 secs quicker than m3 "it certainly feels quicker off the line than BMW's figures - much quicker. " it wouldn't look good for the1 to have official figures quicker than m3" "even at 7000 rpm in 6th it's still pulling with all the force of a naturally aspirated engine and unusually for a turbo the exhaust note keeps getting better the more revs pile on"

So they got it up to 200mph? Maybe they meant even at 7k rpm and also in 6th? |

Enough already...
with the relentless bickering about the M3 versus the 1M. Comparing apples and oranges. They are different machines built with different tasks and buyers in mind.
I don't want an M3. As an old E30 and E21 fan, I was hoping for something light and maneuverable to come back. It seems there is hope after all with the 1M. I have little interest in the morbidly obese M6 and the E9X M3s. They're great vehicles for what they are, but... Probably 95% of the people who purchase these vehicles will never, ever go to the track, so a vehicle that handles well and resembles a go-kart on steroids is a hella fun on average roads. There's plenty of cars that would destroy my uncle's TVR Tuscan 0-60, or around the 'Ring, etc. but that car is a blast to drive. Enough with the comparos between the M3 and the 1M. Sheesh. WGAS... /rant |

It is annoying that all the magazines seem interested in writing about is a comparison that's been beaten to death, and isn't all that pertinent. I haven't read a single M5 preview article that compares the prototype to the M3 sedan. So why all this 1M M3 335is crap?
