accidental 91 Premium gas put in....

I accidently put in $11 of 91 Premium gas into my tank, honestly wasnt paying attention thats why i only put in about 3.5 gallons because it was then that i realized. Stopped, and putted around town until it was almost empty and filled it back up with 93 Ultra. Would my turbos have been hurt in anyway? I also put in a booster for the gas when i had the premium in, and didn't push the car at all. Did i act in the right way? I don't need any wow your a dumbass comments because yes it was accidental because i was talking to someone on the phone and honestly wasn't paying attention, so yes I am a dumbass. All I'm asking for is honest advice and comments.

Uhhh...

the car will run on 91. just fine, actually. fantastically, to be sure.

it will probably run alright on 89, too, minus a little knocking, but I wouldn't do it.

Now, with a tune, that's a different story.

No, the ECU should adjust accordingly. Our engine even work with 89 but power detuned.

91 is the highest you get in CA, the car is tuned for all 50 states. So the 93 is a bonus to you. All new cars have knock sensors and will begin to detune themselves. If you were ever stranded you could even run lower octane without issue if you kept the rpm's down and didn't go to a track day (you'll only really get knocking at higher rpm's)

I've been throwing 87 into my 540 for years, and every shop I talk to agrees there is no issue. Turbo'd cars are a little different though. But the point is 91 is fantastic for your car

I ran European-rated 95 octane in my 135i while in Europe (which, according to the standard repository for all knowledge and wisdom known as the Wikipedia, is equivalent to American-rated 90-91 octane.) Absolutely no problems in 600 miles of driving. For the record, the Euro-rated 95 (i.e., 90-91 octane US) is what the guy at the BMW Welt recommended I use. Like the guy above said, per the owner's manual, you're fine. 89 octane (US) is the bare minimum recommended per BMW (but that will come with a slight performance hit.)

Ahh, to be in Happy Valley again, and have time to just drive around, burning gas....

You could run 87 in these cars day in and day out and it wouldn't cause any damage. It would reduce performance, but it wouldn't hurt anything.

You wont have a problem at all.

91 is just fine, even 87 is fine if you live at higher altitude - its higher volatility compensates for lack of oxygen. I live at 9,000 feet and people here put 87 in supercharged engines (MB 280 Kompressor, Audi Q7).

Setting aside a small lag in performance, 89 and 91 Octane are mechanically more than OK even at sea level. The important thing is that it's unleaded.

I run 91 daily since, as someone else pointed out, that's pretty much the best that's available in California. No problems at all.

I occasionally mix in a few gallons of 100 octane racing fuel to give my car a treat.

As everyone else has said, 91 is just fine. Furthermore it's certainly not going to affect your turbos in any way whatsoever. Whatever made you think that? Also, there was no reason to burn the 91 up if you were worried about it, just add some 93 and you'll be running a mix of the two. The gas station may be mixing 93 with 87 to come up with 91 or any other blend based on their needs.

I'm not from the south bay, and maybe there is someone who is who can clarify, but I thought parts of Silicon Valley (and some SoCal locations) have petrol stations with higher than 91 octane fuel?

I'd also like to point out that I think the OP is trying to rub in the fact that he has access to 93 octane..

Is this post a joke? BMW recommends 91 octane....why would this damage an engine?

Maybe this was a joke and I just don't get it. Its been known to happen.

+1.. 91 octane is the reg gas you are supposed to put in.. the only time I put in 94 octane (highest in my province of Ontario Canada) is when I am running my Map 6 JB3 tune with mods lol.. I think this is a joke thread.

I found one 76 station that carries 100 octane racing fuel (Almaden Expressway & Foxworthy in San Jose). There are probably others in the SF Bay Area.

You may be right, but that would be pretty stupid considering that most of the entire country has access to 93 if you're paying attention to what you're getting.

It's not at every station here, but probably close to half, and you can always count on Shell to have 93.

but just because much of the united states has 93 octane doesn't change the fact that 91 is what bmw recommends... which means it could very well be a joke.

I just meant that it was dumb to brag about something that many/most of us have access to.

Contrary to all the previous posters, I have to agree with your concern. Your car's engine is no doubt horribly damaged by your unfortunate error. However, out of the goodness of my heart I will offer to take your (now junk) car off your hands for a small salvage fee. Thousands wouldn't, but I will.

That's very kind of you. You are a braver and better person than I. I think he should take you up on your offer as he'll never feel confident in his car again.
