HPFP failure?

last few weeks my crank time has been getting longer and longer then Friday on the way home from work as I went to accel hard in 6th @ 70 mph I got a shudder and 1/2 engine light.
It was late so I left my SA a VM that I would be in 1st thing Monday.
Today - I went out to get some gas for the lawn mower. the 1/2 eng light had reset itself but I got on it somewhat hard in 3rd, felt a huge shudder (been around engines long enough to say it felt like a fuel starvation misfire) and the SES light came on, then the 1/2 engine about 10 seconds later.
Ran okay driving like grandma.

Sooooooooo, in to the stealer in the AM, will post up what they find.

this same thing just happend to me on saturday im going to call and try to take my car in today. Except, i never had long starts or any signs of the hpfp going out. i was just driving and all the sudden my idle got really rough, started bogging, sounded funny, then came the SES light and 1/2 engine power

This really sucks man, I can't imagine driving someplace and my 2010 , 42k Car breaking down in the middle of no where. I may miss the fuel pump reliability of my n52.
If an aftermarket company made a HPFP for us they'd be really successful. Any Volunteers?

What is really bad is that this problem has been around since the engine was introduced and it continues. Why can't BMW solve it?

It's really a combination, of the amount of ethanol used in todays fuel with the lack of filters present that can be used in the pumps, of course BMW's flawed design of this pump is the major factor.

Update ---- can't pick up the 1 until tomorrow because of the number of software updates they need to download but they are replacing the HPFP.(had other complaints besides the SES light).

I think I would rather it had failed now, then have to worry about it every time I jump in......

3 questions re. content of this thread:

We think ethanol is involved in HPFP failures why? What's the failure mode that is associated with ethanol? It's almost impossible to buy gas in my market that isn't 10% ethanol.

This is one of several threads where the HPFP replacement reportedly took a long time due to the time it took to reflash/reprogram *lots" of software in the vehicle. So does the new HPFP require different software or is the HPFP the excuse to put in lots of updates that are not necessarily required by the new HPFP? If the latter, how does one just get all these "features" that all of this software needed to "improve" if your HPFP doesn't fail? Can you just drive in and say "update this?" When I read threads about vehicles getting reflashed/reprogrammed due to odd behaviors of the audio system, I start wondering how many things I'll have to notice and complain about to get the code updates. Surely they aren't changing all of this code for the fun of it. There must be reasons it needed to be "improved."

IIRC, several of these "reflash/reprogram" threads are '08s. My US market '09 E82 rolled off the line July 2nd. How many software revisions is it likely to be behind already? Does BMW put the latest code in when they build or only "on condition" of owner complaint?

Interesting thoughts.....

I did complain about my HD radio cutting out a lot.

Also the comfort access not functioning correctly.

but yeah, seems to me shouldn't take that long, I could build a PC in less time with all updates from MS.......hmmmmm

FWIW 5/08 is my build date.

Can you guys tell me what fault codes your car was sending? I've been in four times now for similar issues. The car idles rough, goes into 'fail safe' mode, vibrates, reduced engine power etc. All of the SES codes seem to happen after high throttle (not redline) motoring. I've had the car just over a yr now w/no problems till now. So far they've replaced: injectors 4&5, replaced cyl 4 coil & spark plug & now replaced O2 sensors for (bank 2)cyl 4-5-6. Because the car isn't 'throwing' any fuel pressure codes & the hpfp seems to be operating normally, they will not replace it. Any ideas? I hope this last folly fixes it but I'm not very hopeful.

Not sure about the fault codes but if you get a 1/2 engine light it's the HPFP. Mine is in for it's third one right now and the symptoms were the same as the first time.

Long Crank
Very Rough Idle
Limp Mode After Large Amount Of Throttle

My Feb 09 Build 135i had the HPFP fail @12,230 miles.
Replaced with pump 881.

All appears good... except! Now at @71mph ~2200 rpm, she has an occasional st-st-stutter under light load.

Uh oh: Round 2?
