Vibration with tune under load

Vibration occur when in high gear (4-5-6) when throttle 100 % at 1.8-3.5k rpm. On highway, in 6th speed at almost 45mph, when i floor it, boost build up and vibration come up until i drop the throttle. Running 2.0 on map 5 with DCI. But doing it also with jb3 1.3 and 1.4. Vibration and sound look like running ATVs tire on road or when you go on the groove on the side of the highway.

Its hard to say what is your car's problem. But... on these N54 cars... any miss fire will really make the car shake... sometimes it feels like you are running over something with the wheels/tires... but its the engine thats vibrating - missing!

You did not say how many miles(kms) are on your car? Could it be marginal spark plugs? Or it could be a bad fuel injector or HPFP? ???

The more info the better we can help you. But you should first try contacting your tuner - and see what they say.

You might even want to put the car back to stock and see how the car drives? Do you have a BT cable for any CEL codes?

Good Luck

yea i posted a while ago about this vibration as well. I have it at 100% throttle as well and middle rpms usually. Its not to intense of a shake or rattle but its more audible than it is feel.. Im not sure what it is but its slightly more than what ive noticed on my pickup.
Usually my pickup would do the same thing when floored and the rpm's take a while to catch up when driving fairly slow and in a high gear.
It might be a stress thing im guessing?
It doesnt concern me so much since its identical to what my pickup does. Odd though.

is it possible for me to do a datalog and send it to terry?
never done one.

any links to how to save a datalog? lol

almost 11800miles, no cel code with bt scanner. 3 injector change recently and no difference. No long crack. And it more around 2k rpm in 6th. More like sound than hard vibration

will try to make log and video....

To bring this old thread back; I recently installed JB4 tune, during acceleration I also feel the engine vibration sometimes. It feels like going over rough terrain.

Any resolution to this problem?

I have this same issue. You can only feel it under high load in higher gears like when flooring it in 5th or 6th on the highway once the boost builds up. Dealer could not reproduce the issue. I think it could be something on the driveshaft linkage like the guibo or center bearing. I have not seen any misfire codes and have brand new plugs. I also get a whine from the read when coasting in 4th at 2500 RPM. The dealer says its the differential. I dont know if they are related at all.

If it seems more like an occillation that you can hear and feel, see my post here. It is not abnormal...

Going WOT in 6th at 2-3k rpms is putting way too much load on the car. Downshift!

The only thing you experience is an engine choking and putting too much stress on the drive train, don't forget you're driving a turbo car. Preper gear selection for wot is a must. And try to get your feet a bit lighter. Going wot at 2-3k rpm on 5-6th gear? Why? Drop down to 3rd or 4th and floor it. 4th gear can take you up to 200-210 km/h with lots of power throughout the rpm range...
Just my opinion....

QFT...

This is my first turbo car and I am learning new things about it every day. They are definitely a bit more sensitive than their N/A counterparts...

Did you buy your new spark plugs from a BMW dealer? There have been some (known) issues with the same equivalent plugs bought outside the dealer chain. I would only use BMW plugs for that reason.

Have you had the fuel injector/HPFP recall done?

Also... how do you guys know its not a bad coil pack or coil tube going bad? That would cause a miss under high load and no CEL codes.

As far as flooring it in 6th gear... I do that all the time (when I feel lazy) no problems ever(!) with my flash tune.

I have noticed the same thing with the jb3 and jb4... If you select stock map (ie disable the tune) it will go away.... With the tune on, It feels more like the powertrain is struggling to transfer power to the wheels... I would even describe it like a clutch struggling to transfer power.... Since the power down at lower rpm in higher gear is far greater than on a stock fuel map.... Might be it....

Check your codes. It can be misfires or bad plus or injectors or fuel pump.

Or even vanos solenoids.

Glad I am not the only one that noticed it.

My plugs, etc. are all fine. No codes, no misfires. I have 40k on the car right now and also under BMW warranty still.

Yeah the plugs were installed when I got an oil change at BMW last week since they were due. HPFP was done early 2011 and injectors were checked but did not fall under the recall. It could still be injectors or coil pack but since there are no codes being thrown its hard to diagnose. Sometimes I think its the muffler shaking around.

Also, it happens at any RPM and gear under WOT its just most noticeable when at lower RPM.

This is an interesting observation; could very possibly be the case. Thanks for sharing.

It's from slight amounts of knock and the car pulling timing/throttle most likely....

You know, you can always log it.

Vanos does not work at lower RPMs (3300) I think.
