+1 The silky smooth I6 has proven itself. Let's see how the new four banger holds up.

You do realize that BMW knows a thing or two about four cylinder motors, no? Take a look at their headquarters, they're modeled after a four cylinder, not six, not eight, or even ten or twelve, but four. I have two straight sixes but wouldn't hesitate to buy a four from BMW.

well, time has already proven 6 is reliable, no argument of this point. Will see in the next ten years what's 4 going to be.

I don't know why everyone thinks the inline 6 is the essence of a BMW. Yes they've built many amazing I6's but many more 4cyl before that. BMW using a I4 is NOTHING new if anything its more going back to roots than leaving them.

I do miss the low end torque of my GTI's 2.0T sometimes, but you can't beat the natural smoothness of a I6, no matter how many or how big the counterbalancers you put on.

I'm sure the I4T will be a great motor, but I'm a mechanical romantic, I guess.

Not really. While the first BMW car, the Dixi was a 4, it had an Austin motor and was not designed by BMW.

After building many I6 engines from the 1930's onward, IIRC the first BMW fours came into being for the "New Class" cars some 20 years later.

The issue I have is that after BMW folds it's tent, there will be no more NA inline 6 cylinder automobile engines available for those of us who prefer that configuration.

BMW is definitely known for the Inline 6 as much as Porsche is for the Flat 6. They each have made other very good engines in 4, 8, 10, and 12 cylinders. When I think BMW, I think I-6. The I-6 and F-6 are the most inherently balanced engines imo. They sound unique also. I hope BMW has at least one I-6 normally aspirated engine in its lineup. What is Porsche going to have to do, make everything a turbo as well? That would be cool, everyone with a 911 will have a turbo.

BMW is an engine manufacturer, first and foremost. It's their history; it's what they do. Why do you think there's a propeller on the front of your car? Let's wait and see how it goes -- the new 4s may be their best engines ever. You never know.

It's a propeller/sky

BMW started with airplanes, if you've done the tour/museum and listened

Technically its the Bavarian Flag, recently a BMW spokes person came out and confirmed this after doing a history check.

I'd say that a strong history of four cylinders since the 1960's is probably a safe history with that configuration. Most of the world equates the 3er with four cylinders and has steadily received 3ers and 5ers with a four. There will be no n/a engines of any type by next year at BMW, so it's not just the I6, but the four and eight (and a few twelves) that are changing.

What I find a little ironic is that my turbo six gets worse mileage than my n/a six, has much worse throttle response and still runs out of steam at about the same range, all with only a little more torque and a constant stream of dead HPFP's. Not a huge fan.

As an aside, you mention the "New Class" which was also the first BMW with a Hoffmeister Kink. That's worked out okay for them, maybe the four can stay too?
