Midpipes - 3" single midpipe or double stock N55 with reso' delete?
Hi guys!
im tinkering with the idea of making my own custom midpipe for the N55 engine and wanted you opinions about this im facing two options 1. using the stock N55 midpipes and just canceling the resonator with a Y-PIPE. 2. making a new full 3" midpipe from downpipe to the rear muffler connector. what should i expect with a 3" straight pipe? do the double pipes on the original midpipe have any effect? its not that its a twin-turbo double seperated midpipe like in the N54, in the N55 the downpipe already makes it a single pipe, why not continue it till the back? my head is telling me going on the full 3" way what you guys think? if this will take place, i will post pics in the next month

Just to be clear-DPs and muffler are stock? Removing resonators will add rasp and drone, how much will depend on the rest of your setup.

DP and rear muffler gonna stay stock for now,
im only replacing midpipes, as for drone and rasp, i have noticed that the BMW PE is canceling the midpipe resonator, i guess cant be so wrong about that. my first step is doing the midpipe with one of the above choices, next will be the custom 3" pipe with rear muffler, and lastly will be DP.

I am pretty sure there was a thread with a vendor who was doing a single pipe exhaust about 8 or 9 months ago. If I can find it. I'll let you know. I think for a straight 6 the most efficient exhaust with the best scavenging is a single pipe. Not sure to what extent the turbo effects things

the thing is that in the N55 there is a SINGLE downpipe that splits into TWO pipes.
why do this? maybe to use the old midpipe design? one turbo, one downpipe, two midpipes one muffler. why not make it all ONE from turbo - back

Could packaging of a single large pipe vs two smaller ones at that point under the car, and sound quality and loudness.
It wouldn't be an awful idea for an aftermarket turboback to be a single pipe. One larger pipe certainly weighs less than two smaller ones.

I vote for option #1. ...using the stock N55 midpipes and just canceling the resonator with a Y-PIPE.

i guess ill have to try both over time all a manner of money firstly ill go with the 3" single midpipe and while the pipes are out, i will take my time and making the double midpipe with a Y-pipe

I had my resonator replaced with a magnaflow y-pipe today. I have a 5" cp-e downpipe and now from the shop did custom pipe from the y-pipe to a magnaflow muffler with my stock black tips. Sound is nice and deep no drone whatsoever and I had all the work done fairly cheap $100 including the cost of the y-pipe.
