Here is a pic I took from bimmerfest. Much better visibility out the front of the car over the stock mirror.

I just quickly took out my non-auto-dimming rearview mirror and found that there's NO WIRES what-so-ever going to it. Is the 61120434330 retrofit wire harness still all that I need to get a homelink/compass mirror working? Does it include all the plugs and other odds and ends that I will be needing (since I don't even have the basic 3 wires harness which included the plug...) Thanks!

Mine had the wires so I am not sure if the retrofit kit is all you need. It came with all the necessary plugs.

I looked through the DIY instructions for the E90 Homelink Retrofit Kit. In terms of wire count, I think everything but 1 wire is there with the retrofit harness. The only 1 wire missing with the retrofit harness is the earth wire which for cars already with the cable to the rear view, you can just swap it over to the new harness.

For cars without an existing 3 wires cable however, there will not be an existing earth wire available to swap over from. This sort of implies the need to follow the European instructions to ground the earth wire all the way through the A Pillar??? That will make the difficulty with this retrofit a lot higher.... I mean, how'd I be able to route the earth wire all the way to the bottom of the A Pillar without removing the headliner and the A Pillar liner? How can I even do that?

Another issue is, the DIY on e90post mentioned that the 61 12 0 434 330 retrofit harness have the branches A6 and A7 pre-cut?? (Wire count of 4 instead of 6). Can anyone who have bought the retrofit harness before comment on whether this is the case (A6 & A7 pre-cut, hence only leaving 4 wires instead of 6 on the harness). Thanks!

I have just finished install of the retrofit in a 135i with no original wires going into the mirror. Here's what's different from the E90 writeup and PDF document (http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/4229...m-1-3-meg?da=y):

The retrofit kit (same P/N as above) contains: a cable with five wires (those that correspond to A2-A5 in the PDF plus a ground wire with a plug on one end only), empty X14292, empty X14288, another empty connector, and a plastic piece with wire knife (not sure what the proper name of this part is). You need the new X14292 and the wire knife, the other two connectors can be discarded (keep them until you're finished, in case you destroy an existing connector).

You don't have to cut A6 and A7 since they don't exist, but you have to find a place to connect that brown ground wire. Use the wire knife to piggyback on an existing ground wire in the roof switch unit. I used the thicker one that goes into the rightmost connector on the switch unit.

To recap:

1. Remove the old mirror and the switch unit.
2. Feed the wires of the new cable through the hole.
3. Plug the wires into X14292.
4. Plug all but the brown wire into X14288 (unplug it from the switch unit and disassemble it first).
5. Take the wire knife connector, feed an existing ground wire and the new ground wire through it, close the connector.
7. Install the new mirror, connect X14292 to it.
8. Replace the switch unit and plastic mirror trim.

Anyone know which wire connections are needed for a non-Homelink auto-dim mirror retrofit? My car's a '08 so I'm assuming that the wires are already there going into the existing mirror.

I have that kit sitting in front of me now. My question is, there is another part referenced in the retrofit guide above, 51 95 0 421 324, that seems to be applicable for the auto-dim mirror without the Homelink buttons. My reasoning for questioning this is because I'm assuming that the wiring harness for the Homelink mirrors has more wires bundled in it and they wouldn't be used with a non-Homelink mirror.

I installed an auto dim mirror without homelink and followed the pdf instructions for installing a homelink mirror. THe only thing Homelink or the autodim need are power and ground.

Good to know, thanks. Are all the parts supplied in the retrofit kit used? I ask because the directions don't seem to reference everything in the kit.

EDIT: OK, I think I see what's going on with the kit. U.S. cars (at least early build ones) already have the mirror plug (A1) in the car so you only have to add additional wires to that plug, run them to the overhead console and plug them into their corresponding slots in the black 20-pin plug that's located inside the overhead console. Now my only question is, how about a wiring diagram of the mirror-side plug. The directions very clearly tell you where to put the wires on the other end of the harness (i.e., the overhead console side), but my retrofit kit has both ends of the wiring harness exposed and not installed in any plug housings so how am I supposed to know where those wires go in A1?

I have the same problem, where do branch A2, A3, A4 & A5 connect into the pin #'s of X14292 plug on mirror end??

...found wiring diagram, finished install works great!... I now have homelink, compass & autodim

Successfully completed this today! Fantastic, got the premium package for the cost of the mirror (160 on ebay and retrofit harness 30 from dealer)! Works perfectly! Took less than an hour to do following this DIY:

Need help with the wiring for homelink mirror w/ auto dim. I got a used homelink mirror w/ auto dim. The mirror just have a bunch of wires coming out of it. It didn't come with the mirror arm or connector so I have to reuse the arm and connector from my old mirror. The problem is I don't know which wires to plug into which slot in the connector. To clarify, this is the female connector inside the mirror arm. I need to know which color wire from the mirror goes into which pin hole in said connector. Help!

Thanks.
