Top Gear named the Golf R on their version of Best Cars Awards for 2010.
The Golf GTI was on the list for 2009. These were the only affordable cars on the entire list. |

Reason I brought this up is because realistically, very few young drivers (16-28) is able or willing to drop 50k USD (min. think tax & opts.) for 1M unless person is a true enthusiast. So STI, EVO, R, will definitely cross their mind. Second, it's not a far stretch because SCOTT has conveniently drop Cayman S name in one of his post and that's a car 20-30k more.
There's a lot of demand on the forum right now. But by the time people factored in the full cost (msrp, tax, insurance, loan interest) and is able to obtain a loan, this group is going to be a lot smaller.

I highly doubt it'll be in anyway as good as a 1M though and here in Aust. the price point of the 2 will in no way make them a cross shopping exercise, the 1M will cost at least double the price of the Golf R here... |

In the US the VW will likely run ~34k, or a bit over 75% of the 1M's rumored ~45k msrp.
The R's ~270 hp is 80% of the 1M's hp. Both are relatively small, manual 6 speed only, limited production run cars (in the US), seat 4 and weigh roughly the same. Similar build quality and features, from germany, highly tuner-friendly motors with large aftermarkets, track spec brakes. Both are very good driver's packages; neither is trying to be the fastest thing available. Both are aimed at younger males. There is a big image difference in some circles (and in some countries- less so in Germany), which I suspect results in the claim that they are not competitors. However to those of us less sensitive to image (and price to some extent) they clearly are in the US market. There is no arguing that you'll get more with the 1M, but you'll also pay more. http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/09/v...rica-official/

I have an '04 R32, best car I've ever owned. 70k mi. and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Best seats ever and the car is just a blast to drive on the street and is a monster in the rain/snow. They are not track cars though, if you intend on tracking get the BMW.
As for image, who gives a crap, if you buy a car based on image you're a wanker anyway.

I have a love affair with both VW and BMW products. The Golf R and the 1M are in no way competitors. If for no other reason, pricing. Expected U.S. pricing on the Golf R is $34k. You can't even get into a no-options 135i for that. For the money, the Golf R is the best new car you can buy in the U.S. That being said, I'd rather pick up a CPO E46 M3. A barely-used example would be around the same price, have a comparable warranty (VW's U.S. warranty is only 3 years/36,000 miles B2B and 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain), likely more features and options, and be RWD (aka, right-wheel drive), and it's an M car.
They're the exact same seats that you'll find in all '06-present U.S. GTIs with leather, the only difference being the embossed R logo on the headrests. |
