Not a n00b, but I've got a few questions before buying a 1 series.
Looking at picking up a 135i and I'm looking for some answers.
First off, would you buy an '08 with 80k miles? It has been taken care of and brought to the BMW dealership, but everything I've looked at has lower miles. When I asked about the HPFP, he knew what I was talking about and said it was already replaced along with the water pump. Second off, how does JB3 work? He said the car has a JB3 20hp chip. I'm unfamiliar with Juice Box tunes or how they work. I've had a piggyback on my Miata and swapped it over to a standalone Megasquirt, but don't know what JB tunes are classified as. I tend to stray away from 'chips' because I feel out of control as far as tuning. Anything else I should really look for or look at when I go to check it out? I appreciate any replies! |

Have turbos been replaced? Warranty runs out at 80k to cover wastegate rattle.
Try to check for leaking oil filter housing and valve cover as those are common. Ask if coils and injectors have been replaced and when because there have been revisions to those parts. Ask if a walnut blast has been done. Ensure all records are up to par and the owner has taken care of her

How many owners?
Do you gave a budget where upping the price paid a little will get you lower miles?

I have a higher budget, but if this one is sound, that means more money for maintenance if needed... and mods! Always nice to have a cushion. |

If you do have a higher budget I would consider lower mileage always just due to down the road maintenance costs.
Depending on what's out there. maybe a newer 135 with fewer miles and remaining maintenance and warranty is definitely a plus. Also from how it seems the n55 engine is a bit more refined and less quirky than the n54.

Obviously the lower the miles, the better. Just not sure if these are super unreliable as they get up there. Haven't seen too many people post about theirs with that many miles. I'm curious. |

There are more than a few guys on here in the 100s and running strong. Don't remember who but maybe they will chime in.
If your not concerned about warranty and you can get a steal on the car provided it is well taken care of with no outstanding issues then I don't see why not to pick it up. Have you asked why he is selling it?

I'm not too familiar with the JB3 as the latest is the JB4 G5 board version of the BMS piggyback controllers that can do a lot more. I would plan on selling that tune and either getting a JB4 or a flash tune option. Look into JB4, Cobb or BB Flash depending on features your looking for and comfort level of flashing.

Too many miles for me, but that's just a personal opinion. I also try to avoid modded cars. It may well be a good car, but, for me, I would pass.

Its just a piggyback boost controller. Should be pretty simple to remove. I don't know what kind of options the JB3 has. What all things would you like to modify? The N54 uses a closed loop fueling using wideband O2 sensors meaning you don't have to worry about changing fuel settings. It's also really good at retarding timing before knock so the JB4 alone is good for low to medium power with the proper supporting mods from there you will need something to handle a flash to cover the fueling and timing settings. Some people prefer flash only some prefer a JB4 + Flash.
