Bimmer is for cars… Beamer or Beemer is for Motorcycles

I keep reading posts where people want to use the slang for BMW cars (Bimmer) and incorrectly use the slang for BMW motorcycles (Beamer or Beemer). Some people are new to the community so I thought I would inform them of the difference.

For a little history behind the terms please see the following thread:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=beamer

Or this link to BMW Car Club of British Columbia:
http://www.bmwccbc.org/misc/tech-and-trivia/bimmer.html

Cheers

There are a lot of "regular" English words that are constantly used incorrectly by most people, like "what's your 'Nationality'?" instead of asking "what's your 'ethnicity'?"

Nationality = of what country are you a citizen?
Ethnicity = of what racial background are you a descendant of?

Example:

Q: What's your Nationality?
A: I'm American

Q: But aren't you Asian?
A: Yes, you mean I have to be Caucasian to be an American? I was born here you moron. You mean to ask what my ethnicity is.

Most everyone incorrectly uses the term Beamer when referring to cars, but it seems less of an offense than to call a motorcycle a Bimmer.

So it's easier to simply accept what people are trying to say or ask.

What gets me is when people refer to BMW as B.M. for short. Doesn't that mean "Bowel Movement," and is BMW too long an abbreviation?

By the way, Merry Christmas everyone!

So, to pronouce is phoenetically, I should say:

Bim 'er (The "Bim" sounds like Jim?) vs. Beam 'er (Beam like a light beam?)

this is too funny.

Thanks for doing so. The vast majority of BMW owners (bikes and cages alike) are relative newcomers to the brand and tend to call all BMW vehicles beemers. It's probably the media influence.

It doesn't matter what sources you quote, in the UK they are called Beemers - cars and bikes. Nobody says 'Bimmer'. Here in the US: Bimmers. I prefer Beemer and since I still have the outrageous limey accent, that's how it will be

From the link, "Bimmer" appears to have originated somewhere up near BAA-ston, which may make up the phonetic sounding? I can just see JFK saying beemer and it coming out bimmer. Over here of the right (read correct ) coast it has always been a beemer, at least since back in the 70s when I first got into repairing AMERICAN cars.
My godfather always teasingly asks how the Bowl Movement - Wedemeyer is doing . . .

Yes it matters. It matters a lot. The only correct slang for a BMW automobile is Bimmer.

I agree. I guess this marks us as old pharts, huh? There don't appear to be very many BMW CCA, RA or MOA members on this forum.

I dare any of you to say beemer at a BMWCCA meet. Also, everyone knows BMW is pronounced bay-em-vay.

You get their magazine, Roundel. Also, depending on the dealer, you can get a pretty hefty discount on parts. There are a lot of other individual chapter benefits as well.
