Tire Chains on BMW 128i
Hi Guys -
I have searched the forums and have been unable to get a definitive answer on whether or not i can use tire chains (besides BMW OEM) on my car. I have a 2011 128i with the Goodyear LS2 205/50R17. They are the run flats. I would like to use SCC Shur Grip Z (http://www.scc-chain.com/Traction%20Pages/Trac_SGZ.html) What do you guys think? And yes tire chains are a must to go up the mountains around los angeles when its snowing. |

I'd consult the manual, I'm pretty sure there is a section specifically on tire chains. Other than that, I would think any chains would be fine so long as they are installed correctly.
Just remember to put them on front tires for front wheel drive cars. |

Seems like the safest course is OEM BMW chains. Tom |

I used cable chains from O'reilly's 3 weeks ago for about 20 miles. Hard to get on. Plenty of traction. No problem whatsoever. Impossible to get back in the original bag.

Although I haven't had to use them yet, the SCC Shur Grip Z are the chains I bought for my 2009 128 M sport. These chains are designed for limited clearance and do fit very nicely. If you buy these, I would highly recommend fitting them in your garage (or somewhere dry) before you need to use them. Stuck in the snow is no time to learn how to chain up. As chains go, these are about the easiest to get on and off, and do fit very securely. Mine are primarily for emergencies, since my wife's X3 does much better than my 128 will ever do in the snow and ice.
