ZHP's are tough to beat, but a 1 is probably the natural progression. Good luck.

I had a 2013 328i on order and ended up canceling the order after driving a 135i. I didn't need the extra room of the 3, just wanted a fun to drive car with a manual transmission. I took delivery of a 135i M-Sport, 6-speed this week and absolutely love it!

Do you need the back seat and trunk often? I don't. The 1 has the same engine in a smaller chassis. So no brainer for me.
You should post the same question on E90 post (if not already done so) and see their response. |

I was moving out of a Mazda MX-5 and the 1 was the only BMW I seriously considered.
It felt big when I first drove it, but then I drove a 3 for the hell of it. The 3 felt like a school bus. No thanks. |

I did look at a '11 328i Coupe. I really liked it, but the dealer was doing the bait-n-switch on the pricing. I stopped by another dealer and looked at '10 135, liked it, brought the wife, she liked it. So, today we bought it. I had both for overnight and the 1 was much more enjoyable to drive. I was trading in an '04 JCW Cooper S which drove like a go cart.

I hear ya: Before I bought my 128i, I test drove the new F30 and it felt awkward and cavernous... I was more than happy to get back into my E36 and drive home.

I was certain that an E9X M3 was the car, I drove them and drove them and just didn't connect with any of them. I was looking for manual and the 6 speed in the M3 (maybe I'm picky), is really not a great thing. The car felt big, felt heavy (possibly simply due to the lack of low rev torque), but it didn't feel sharp.
When I drove a 1 series (admittedly it was the 1M), it was 5 minutes behind the wheel and decision was made. Spectacular. But I'd driven the 135i also prior to that and loved it also. Never liked any of the other 3's, but I reckon the 335 would be great. Still a bit big for me though. |

If cost were not a factor I would have picked a 335, coupe, Vermillion/cream interior. But that would have been 47K in 2 wheel drive and STILL NO LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL.
Used coupes cost about the same as the new 128 I eventually picked. |

Yes. I drove and considered an M3 Sedan. Loved the car. Then I drove the 135i manual tranny and never looked back. Plus saved me some money and got me a Harley too! :-)

I couldn't get my golf clubs in/out of a 3 convert. So that left a 1 or a 6. Since I was buying and not leasing, the 1 fit the budget MUCH better.

For me it was all about the drive and the curves. Don't need a bigger car. For driving satisfaction, small is beautiful. I would have gone with a two seater but liked the ability to carry passengers, in a pinch, that seldom happens but when it does, like yesterday, I am glad for the back seats.
With the one, it is almost, but not quite, like driving a roadster with the benefit of a back seat when needed. For longer trips with luggage, my wife's car is available- quiet, comfortable and relaxing, but not fun. |

In the end, it all comes down to preference. I prefer small, tight cars, so I don't really want to upgrade to a 3-series, but I can see why someone would. The cars are nicer inside, and there are small improvements that I enjoy, depending on the circumstance. For example, the 3-series cruise control will actually apply brakes on a down-hill run to keep the car at the set speed. The cruise in the 1-series doesn't do that (at least not my 2010). Little things, but still things. For some people, those little things are a bigger priority than a stiff suspension and short-wheelbase agility.

I too considered the 3 series over the 1 series... I was very very torn between the two until I test drove both the 135, and 335. I personally wanted something sporty, that could handle well and the 135i gave me just that. And btw.... I personally think the interior of the 1 series is nicer than the 3 series. I found the 3 series to be more of a cruiser rather than a sports car. Both are great choices, but it just depends on what your needs are.

Good thing that's near the bottom of my list As long as there are three pedals on the floor and six cylinders, plus turbo, under the hood, I'm good to go

I didn't consider the 3 series because I didn't think I needed the extra space. Had my 135i in for it's two year service and was given a 335 loner. Nice car but after driving it for a day was glad I didn't buy one. No where near the fun of my 135 to drive. And I saved bucks also.

I'm going to go drive at least one and maybe more than one 3 series tomorrow on my day off. I'm also going to drive (again) a 135i just to compare after I've driven the 3.
I really prefer the looks of the 3 both inside and out, especially in the coupe. But if the 1 really feels that much better from behind the wheel then the 1 will be the way to go. |

I'm in the rare position where I actually own both a 335i (E90) and 135i, so hopefully I can offer a different perspective. First and most of all, the choice is largely dependent upon what the OP is looking for.
If you're looking for a total driving experience, then the 1 series would be the way to go. However, if you want a nice blend of a comfortable drive to performance, I would definitely recommend the 335i. Just like the 5 series is more 'comfortable' than a 3 series, so is the 3 series to the 1 series. I treat the 135i more as my 'fun' weekend car, because for daily driving, it's just not as comfortable. To exaggerate, it's like saying the 1 series is more comfortable than a 7 series for daily driving. Nobody will say that. So if you're looking for a good blend of comfort plus performance, the 335i will definitely satisfy. However, I wanted to add one more point. My track car is my 335i, not the 135i. I do like the overall balance of the 3 series chassis more, that when applied to a road course, really shines. The 1 will out corner my 3 any day, but it's not always about the fastest lap time. The 1 series has more of a pocket rocket feel, whereas the 3 has the larger car, more solid feel. It's important to note that I feel this way only because our cars have PLENTY of HP; otherwise I would always prefer the lighter, more nimble car for track. I may slowly mod my 1 for track as well, so my opinion may change in the future Also a note that for my weekend drives up mountain roads, I'd always take the 1, not the fully track prepped 3 In the end, both are great cars, and it's gonna be a tough choice! Both cars have plenty of HP, so I would not let the lighter 1 chassis be the determining mark. It sounds like you test drove both cars, and didn't give in to an impulse buy on one of them. So if the initial impulse didn't help make your choice, I'd go back to answering what kind of car you really want, and purchase accordingly. As I said above, I'm one of the rare individuals who own both, and love both

The 328 coupe is more stable at highway speeds, but less tossable. I would have considered it except a 328 coupe is $7,275 more than a similarly-equipped 128 coupe.
