BMW X1 or X3?

The ol Liberty wagon is gettin on and I am starting to look for a replacement. I was thinking perhaps an X3 3.0d second hand or even an X1 which Australian dealers are now advertising.
http://www.bibstillwell.com.au/scrip...lCategoryID=72

Anyone have any comments/experience on a used X3?

Thanks.

Make sure you get the one after the LCI. Otherwise, the X1 looks fantastic.

Don't like X3. Sorry WAY.

I will be interested to sell my dad an X1 when it comes out in April. I better get on with the pricing. I am sure a bad old man looking brown car with tan leather is cheaper???

The X3 seems to have been around for some time. We were behind one yesterday, and it doesn't seem any wider than my 125i - optical illusion perhaps, but if the compact size of the X1 doesn't worry you, it could be an option. I do note that they are mentioning a 190kW 6 cylinder motor - is this the same motor that they put in the 128i in the USA?

The X3 has a very harsh ride. Its interior is very dated and based on the older generation of cars eg e46. There is a new X3 coming out soon as BMW86 mentioned. If you are dead set on an X3 then I would at least wait until the new model arrives and then commence bargaining.

However I would lean more towards the X1. Newer technology, updated cabin, better ride if you read the reports, more economical but with similar performance, and in terms of size it is very close to the X3, I dont think you would notice to be honest. Priced below the X3.

The X1 is unfortunately sold out in many dealerships for 2010.

ok wife has the x3 2.0D, i drive it abit so i know how it rides/goes...

1:handles great, x5 is not much better (dad's got 1)
2: our car can run 1000km on 1 tank (when wife drives)
3:x1 will be abt the same size as the current x3
4:new x3 due in 2011 will be abt same size as old x5

i agree inside in old style and the key is just fugly! but it goes ok for what it is... my 2c =)

IMO the current X3 is a fail and it's well overpriced. BMW should iron out all the flaws with the original X3 and make it a lot easier on the eyes.

Thanks all. My budget ould be about 40k so i do not think the X1 will be a serious contenda. Tonights Top Gear coincidently tested the X3 and canned it. I realise the X3 will be replaced in 2011, but that is too far away and out of my budget.

I need 4wd, practicality and some grunt. I thought the x3 may be worth a look, but perhaps not. May consider an XT Foz or even another Lib. Any other suggestions?

You took a Top Gear review seriously?

We bought a VW Tiguan 147 while we wait for the X1 to come out. Very roomy in the passenger area, boot space a bit small though, goes well, good on fuel, good resale (thats why we bought it), about your price range. Very impressed. My 2 cents.

Apparently my dealer had sold all their allocations of 35. I assume other dealers would have a bigger allocations in a bigger market.

Neither! For around 40k I'd go Hilux SR5 dual-cab. Serious off road ability and who gives a sh*t if someone scrapes it. The X3 is already consigned to history and the X1 will join it. Who honestly believes the X1 is a serious 4x4?!

I reckon that's marketing BS to create an artificial sense of demand so you'll jump in. I wouldn't believe they'd pre-sold 35 unless they could show you a list - but of course they wouldn't do that.

I didn't think the X cars were marketed as serious off roaders?

I'm sure if you told your dealer that you wanted one he'd work something out.

X1 will be $60k otr minimum unfortunately. Good thing about X3 is that you can pick one up cheaply! I know, I am about to trade in our 2007 X3 3.0si. Getting 50% of what we paid for 2.5 years ago!
