2nd gear crunching?

I'm getting a random strange clicking noise coming from second gear whenever it's engaged.

When the car is being eased into 2nd, there's a small click, almost like a leaf crunch noise emanating from the engine/tranny. It's a lot more apparent upon leaving second gear though as the noise is much more obvious. It's the loudest when it's engaging 3rd but it makes the same noise if I'm shifting into neutral or 4th. When I skip 2nd though, no noise. I want to say it's the load shifting around when going through each gear but it only occurs through 2nd gear.

Anyone ever have these symptoms before?

EDIT:
Strangely, it seems to be happening when I'm shifting from 1st into 3rd also but not 1st into neutral or 4th.

Since it's going into/out of second, I'm thinking your synchros on the 1-2 and 2-3 are getting worn down.

Do you get the sound if you double-clutch your shifts? If you don't then it would be a pretty good indication the synchros are worn.

Sometimes (Not sure on this car - I have a slushbox) just changing the tranny fluid can help the synchros out.

Double clutching is out of the equation unless my knowledge of the action is misunderstood.

Double clutching = shifting into neutral from previous gear > disengage clutch > rev match > engage clutch and shift into gear

If this is the correct set of events, then I suppose it's irrelevant as I'm hearing the clicking/crunching noise also at the very first step of releasing into neutral.

Gearbox just got a fresh set of Redline ATF maybe 2 months ago.

Same here, my DCT gearbox just make the clicking/crunching noise when it downshift and also engaing from neutral or to neutral.

Spoke to BMW, they say it is the nature of DCT gearbox, nothing major or so.

I only got my 135 couple of months and I am experiencing all this clicking crunching noise.

Thanks.

Mine's a manual transmission, not a DCT

Just got back from the stealership.

15 miles with no F@#$ing fix. "Normal" operation.

I'm starting to think it's my 3rd gear syncros. Anyone with a MT try and see if when you shift from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 3rd or 2nd to neutral, see if you hear a clicking/leaf crunching sound...

just to confirm when you shift from 1 to 2

- Clutch in (no sound).
- Move to 2nd (no sound).
- Clutch out (click sound). --> do you hear the sound when you clutch out 100% or in the process of clutching out?

I will try this omw home tonight and i will let you know..

Almost correct good sir, but switch it from "2 to 3" instead of "1 to 2"

The click sound is heard upon completion of clutch out.

It's apparent for me from these following situations:

*2nd - 3rd
*1st - 3rd
*2nd - Neutral

I get a "leaf crunching" noise 25% of the time approximately shifting from 2nd -> 3rd WITHOUT double clutching.

I never learned to double clutch. :/

Good to know good to know, thanks for adding. I am going bats@#$ insane hearing it creak every time I shift. If there's one thing to be thankful for, it's that these cars are really good at isolating outside noises so I only hear it when my windows are down. Unfortunately, I'm also the type to enjoy the weather when I drive as well :'(.

You might try changing your transmision fluid. Lots of people have said good things about RedLine's fluids. D4ATF or some other one MTL ? There was a post about this other RedLine fluid recently - making gear shifts much smoother and getting rid f this 2nd gear crunch.

Done already about two months ago, I believe it was changed to D4ATF I just started to notice the noise recently. No idea if it was happening before or not.

~44500(miles)

Humm... I think I would throw some OE BMW's MTF-LT-3 or LT-4 in there and then take it to a BMW dealership. I suspect it is a bad gear in the tranny.

Have you ever missed a gear change really badly? Or grinded say reverse gear? You can break a tooth or two off of a gear and then all it takes is that broken tooth to get smashed between two other gears. Then its all over for your tranny. This is one reason why it is important to change the gear oil frequently. It sounds like your 2nd gear is damage. But the good news all of this should be covered by BMW. I would just get rid of the RED redline tranny oil and put in some regular BMW trans oil.

Good Luck,
Dackel

I've never missed or grinded a gear personally but this car was used when I got it, it had around 38k on the clock when I had it. Transmission oil was the first thing I changed.

What you're saying makes sense but trying to get a dealership to get an actual diagnosis and fix the issue is a real kick in the nuts when all they're doing is shrugging their shoulders and saying it falls within spec.
