Axel back install surprise...

So I had my berk race axel back put in a few months ago and started noticing this rattle when I hit hard bumps...finally brought it in to BMW to discover that they had cut out my resonator box (no complaints there!) but had also cut my mids and installed clamps without telling me...the clamps were hitting the subframe and the axel back was hitting the back left wheel strut...what a f'ing pain in the ass

Anyone else have this issue? I'm now being quoted $150 to cut and reposition the exhaust and mid pipes!

I plan on getting berk mids as well, I pray to god that they fit better than the stock n55 mids.

Who did you have install it? Sounds like they didn't tell you everything haha I may be getting Berk Race Exhaust and Berk Mids so the full package. I'll let you know if I have that problem but it might have just been a installation issue

Yep plan on mids in March so I hope they fit better...

I had BMW in Brighton do it and they did the install in maybe 30 mins max so I didn't think they would have done any serious work to it...either the tech rushed through it or was just garbage.

I'm actually currently at BMW Peabody and they're fixing it up...not going back to Brighton that's for sure, just bringing them the bill, BS!

Yeah I go to Turner occasionally for more complicated work but for something easy like this any decent tech should be able to install an axle back without issue

Yeah unless you specifically asked to have the mids cut out, you do not need to cut anything to install berk axle back. They effed it up the tech probably thought he was installing the BMW performance exhaust (which requires cutting) and saw the berk and was like oh man.

they could have at least have told you.

Another rec for Turner. I also think Wagner BMW is pretty good when you need to go the stealer.

I already had the BMW PE exhaust on the car...he cut about 2 inches out of the mids and cut the resonator off completely...BMW peabody fixed it completely, just a whack job the first time by BMW Brighton. d'oh

Ahh... The plot thickens.

For the BMW performance exhaust, sometimes they cut out the resonator in the mid pipe section. A normal axleback will literally just bolt up, no cutting required. Since you already had the BMW performance exhaust before installing the aftermarket axleback, your exhaust may have been in a condition that made it impossible to just bolt up. Have you looked at the exhaust since the PE install? My bet is that they had to cut for it, making the simple bolt-on for the aftermarket axleback impossible, which is why they installed it how they did. It is completely normal to cut out the resonator during a BMWPE installation.

Also, is this turner the same that has the huge online turner motorsport store? If so, I have bought many parts there in the past, and can vouch that they are good people working there (though I'm not local so I don't k ow about their actual shop).

Yeah turner motor sport is the same...turnermotorsport.com they are legit and very helpful but their labor costs are more per hour...so I only go there for complicated stuff.

BMW PE was installed at port and to my knowledge, it was not cut or clamped at all. I sold the axle back portion of the PE exhaust and had the Berk unit put on at 5,000 miles ie when the noise started. There is a X bar support under the mid pipes and part of the axle back section, this is where it was hitting on hard bumps and causing the rattle. The axel back OEM piece has a dimple where it wraps around the back left strut, the berk axle back does not have this dimple and thus was VERY close to the strut, clearly rubbing on certain occasions under hard acceleration and or cornering...the tech at BMW Peabody fixed it quickly no problems. I have no idea why BMW Brighton didn't say anything or have the brains to actually make sure the axle back section cleared the struts and wouldn't knock against the subframe...seems kind of a big piece of the puzzle to ignore especially when it is aftermarket bolt on and won't be covered under regular maintenance if it needs repair (hence my lovely $195 bill from BMW Peabody earlier this evening) what a pain.

After market exhausts guys beware of who puts your bolt ons in your car!

If they installed it at port, they did the full install at port including the cut and clamp. There was no insidious plot to mis-install your berk.

I had the tech in Peabody call the tech in Brighton who said that he had cut and clamped the exhaust. Idk if that entails additionally cut/clamped or initially cut/clamped...regardless he did some work that was not just a simplistic install...
