My 2006 330xi deemed a total loss after 3.5 weeks in body shop

I don't think so, but I will confirm later on this week. A relative had an accident in California years ago in which the car was totalled, and she got back sales tax AND registration fees. Don't know if that's still the case in general, much less NJ. I'll keep all posted.

KMA, ive got an important question for you.

I got my 325i last month at open road bmw also. Drove it around for a month, then a deer hoped out in front of me and i smacked it going like 15. I also might have warped my brakes. Now my hood on the left side is a little dented in as well as the left kidney grill. Which body shop did u use?

Definitely not. It's getting picked up at the body shop tomorrow by a salvage company on behalf of the insurance company. I believe they technically own it now (or will once they cut a check), so they can sell it off at auction. Beware of any 330xi's that become available on e-bay in the months to come with "super low miles"

Wow, talk about bad luck, too. Sorry to hear about this. I actually live pretty far from Open Road (~about 50 miles north). I just happenned to buy a car when I stopped in while running an errand in the area. I had the car taken to Paul Miller Auto Collision, which is part of the auto group that owns Paul Miller BMW in Pompton Lakes. This is not super close to me either (~20 miles), but supposedly they are the only Certified BMW Collision Facility in North Jersey. I think this made a big difference in this accident being deemed a "total," as they had a lot to say in terms of what it would take to fix the car per BMW standards.

That being said, there are lots of good body shops out there that are not "Certified by BMW." I once took one of my cars to Difeo BMW (which is nearby to me), and they sent the car to Route 303 Auto Body in Valley Cottage, NY. The work was superb and very quick, and I could call at any time for an update. Also, I used to live in NYC, and when I first moved to NJ, I had my bumpers repainted by Prestige Auto Body in Fort Lee (Anyone who has had their car garaged in the City knows why). They stink as far as project management and estimation skills go, but the work--especially the paint matching--was very good.

you think there would be any difference in where the work would be done? i was thinking that maybe bmw certified body shops get their parts very quickly...but then again they might be too expensive and i dont think i want my insurance knowing about it.

JMK BMW in Union has a certified BMW body shop. They have done work for me in the past and were amazing!

For your job, which is primarily body work, I wouldn't think there would be much difference as long as you went to a decent shop. I know that at Prestige in Fort Lee that I mentioned, the guy there would do the work however you wanted (i.e., would repair or replace, would write up the work differently if you were paying vs. insurance, etc.) It seems logical to think there's an advantage to a BMW certified shop being affiliated with the parts department of a dealership, but I'm certain that the body shops I used got their parts from the nearest BMW dealer anyway (i.e., This is big business for the dealerships, and they deliver directly to body shops. You'll see their delivery trucks right at the body shop).

Bottom line, I would think if you use a shop that someone on this board recommends, should be a safe bet.

I don't know where you are in Jersey, but when I had my 330, I used the body shop @ JMK BMW on Rt 22. I do not remember if they were certified, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask.

Mini-update: I confirmed that I will receive sales tax back as well. ADP, the company that goes out and gets the car value, asked for a 1 day delay with the insurance company, as this is the first 2006 330xi they've had to do, so I don't have a final figure yet for value.

If you look at the picture closely you can see that the front left wheel is cambered in from the impact. That is a big tip off to frame damage and hence makes the 38k estimate a little high but not unimaginable.

Hope things work out for you with your next E90.
