Hmmmm, thats very intresting. I prolly wouldn't buy insurance because I don't think the roads here are nearly as bad as they are in the east. but, How did the sales person "force" you to buy tire insurance?

they didnt force me, i just thought it was a good idea. Im regretting it now because the parents said the money we "wasted" on that i could have "wasted" on a new set of wheels, like those volks in the Marketplace grrrrr

that insurance is a life saver. I got a flat 2 weeks after taking the car home. I was 100 miles away from home. I got the indicator another time but it was just low on pressure. So glad I got the insurance.

Good story...I feel relieved now. I was beginning to doubt myself after paying $550 for tire/wheel warranty/insurance at the dealer. CA mentioned there really were only 2 things I should even consider out of the menu of 17 items, the tire insurance and the extended service/warranty which can be exercised in up to the 3rd year of ownership/service. Seeing how bad the roads are in DC metro area and all the different posts here on costs of replacements of the RFTs and availability, decided to sign up for it...I guess I feel better about it now

Fuck the runflats, just replace the runflats with regular tires like I did. I replaced them with yokohamas that were the exact specifications as my 330i SP Bridgestone Potenzas. I haven't looked back ever since, the ride quality is astounding. I guarantee a positive change.

Tire Dealerships Road Hazard Insurance is another atternative for around $100 a set, and you dont need to have bought the tire from them to get the same protection.

You are right about the "roads" to the east being bad, living in Chicago it's a no brainer for me to have insurance. It's not if, but when I'll suffer tire/wheel damage from hitting a massive pothole, especially in the spring time. Just to keep the love/hate RFT/anti-RFT....... So you guys who removed or hate the RFT's are you still running Window 98, or OS 9 ? Are you the same people who hate the Idrive, or any new crazy technology? Or do you not like them because you read they were bad , especially in the early RF technology, maybe RFT's that were put on a car without the suspension tuned? Do you really think BMW isn't capable of tuning the suspension in a BMW way to make the RFT's feel/perform well?

I got the insurance on my car. It was $499 for 5 years of coverage for the wheels and tires. In the previous 5 years of living on the east cost (Boston and NYC) I have replaced 4 tires due to potholes.
My E90 has even lower profile tires than the other 2 cars I was driving, so the insurance is almost a necessity. In each instance 2 tires went flat at the same time, leaving me stranded and waiting for roadside service. Each instance cost more than the price of the insurance (and I had no wheel damage). For those people who live in areas with excellent roads, be thankful. But for me runflat tires and wheel and tire insurance will likely pay for itself many times over.

Didn't know that RFTs were still or is a sore subject I appreciate all your views wrt RFTs but I still maintain that until BMW has a spare tire cubby hole retrofit (now that's an idea) be it for a doughnut or full-size spare, I'd just feel better with the factory setup of RFTs despite the prevailing (and hopefully soon to be addressed) issues of availability, choice and cost. The current alternative of the M Mobility Kit or similar just seem to be a little bit more compromised than the RFT setup. On that same premise, the tire/wheel warranty still feel like a good idea but it looks like I may have overpaid just a tad much....

I'm not trying to offend or criticise anyone, I'm just working on a theory that a certain amount of people dislike new technologies across the board. There's a pattern somewhere. People are so confident about why not to have RFT's, why? I'm not going around saying that people should get rid of their tires, just trying to understand the people that do.

I think the main issue between those who hate RFT's and those who don't is based on location.
One one side you have those who never have to deal with potholes (or rain or snow, for that matter). These individuals can mount 19 and 20 inch wheels on thier car and never think twice about it. They have likely never experienced a blow out, or a nail in thier tire. And if they did, they probably didn't have to worry about the safety of the neighborhood they found themselves stranded in. On the other side of the argument, you have those who are taking a chance even with the stock 17inch wheels, but still accept the risk of "increased road hazard and subsequent damage" that comes with the sport package. Ultimately the choice comes down to your personal situation. True, RFT's are more expensive than non-RFT's. They are also marginally heavier. Comparing identical sizes and brands, the specs from the Tire Rack show that RFT's are maybe 2 lbs heavier. But considering my location, RFT's are an excellent addition to a great car. When I factor the $470 (parts and labor) it cost to replace two blown 205-55-16 Michellin All-Season tires on my wife's Volvo after hitting a pothole. I think my $499 for wheel and tire insurance was well worth it. Not to mention that the incident happened after hours and required my car to stay overnight before anyone could fix it. If this happened with my E90, I would have been able to drive home and have the tires (larger size and much higher price tag) replaced in the morning at no additional cost.

I think the insurance is pricey, but i guess its worth it if you plan on keeping run flats.
I'm amazed at the condition of your rims from the potholes. Boston roads must really suck. I think it sucks that he forced you. No one can force to sell you anything. sounds like a banchot salesguy. |

He was really nice sales guy he explained me he has this Run Flat tire insurance and especially in East Coast people end up using these insurance very often. Try driving in Boston Downtown around South Boston, Downtown, Dorchester .... You will see construction truck, potholes every where. Getting a nail is having fair chance...
When i said forced me to buy insurance i meant he pushed me a lot and convinced me that this $600 in insurance won't be much in long term and i realized it within in few month ... my 0.02 cent |

I take it most people actually finance the insurance like I did?
If it's an extra $1 a month, who cares? Get insurance, right?

Agreed.
I was offered the Wheel/Tire Insurance for $450 so I took it. Over 48 months, it works out to be just under $10. My insurance also covers me for up to $750 Hotel/Overnight expenses etc if I get a flat tire away from home. The big bonus for me was the fact that they replace the damaged wheels. Those puppies are not cheap |
