1 series and 3 series use the same steering wheel?

Does anyone know if there is a difference?

Good Q. When I tested 3 and 1, wheel was different because 1 had ///M.

The only thing you need to worry about are sport vs non-sport. The sport airbag is not the same as the non-sport airbag. Otherwise all e82 & e9x sport wheels are the same and all e82 & e9x non-sport wheels are the same.

Are you comparing airbags on the 1 vs 3?

As far as the 1 goes, the Airbag is completely interchangeable between the sport and non sport pkg. No mods. I have done it...went from the non-sport wheel in my 1 to the sport pkg wheel...same airbag.

So could you put an M3 steering wheel in an automatic 1 and get real paddle shifters instead of the goofy push-pull things?

I've noticed that the thread sewing the wheel up in the M3 has the "M" colors. The "1" "M" wheel has black thread. Anyone else noticed that, or are my eyes going?

Nope, you're not going blind. Thats what I noticed as well. Switching steering wheels sounds pricey.

My father did it for I think $400 in the E46 330Ci he had. Went from the Sport wheel to an M3 wheel with paddle shifters in an automaitc. I guess they were wired for it but you couldn't order it then or somehting.

Hmm. On the 3's the ZSP & m-tech airbag was not interchangeable with the non-ZSP airbag. If you are going from a non-sport wheel to a sport/mtech wheel on a 3-series you also need to change the airbag. There are warnings about that all over the e90post m-tech wheel swap DIY: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11825

I forget, do the non-sport 135i's still come with a sport wheel? If so, that would explain it.

There's a guy on eBay that's been selling hundreds of wheels online for a while now. The guys on the e90post DIY recommend him and I recently ordered a wheel from him as well. Even with shipping from East Europe the total price was less than anyone else I could find online.

It looks like he has the alcantara wheels with the tri-color ///M stitching for around $390 and the leather M3 wheel for paddle shifters for $411

That's a standard for BMW. For example, the E39 540i Sport had the same steering wheel as the E39 M5, except for the tri-colored stitching. The latter is unique only to ///M cars, but does fit as a direct swap!

If I'm not mistaken the

non-sport wheel on 1er = sport wheel on 3er
sport wheel on 1er = ZSP/M steering wheel on 3er

because on the 1er in the US if you order a sport pack you get the ///M wheel

The BMW Performance wheel is the same for the 3 series as the 1 series so I assume the other ones are too.

Sport 135i wheel = M-tech
Sport 128i wheel & non-sport 135i wheel = Sport 3-series wheel.
Non-sport 128i wheel = ???

I simply don't know what wheel comes with the non-sport 128i. It's probably the same sport wheel but I haven't seen it in person.

The "M" Wheel on the 1 is an M Sport wheel, not an ///M wheel. There is a difference in terms of badging and marketing. True ///M items have a recessed ///M emblem and the tricolor stitching, M Sport items are not recessed and do not have the tricolor stitching. There are also variations in design and materials used in the construction.

The steering steering wheel hub on the 1 & 3 are the same as are many other components. The 1 is based on the 3 and to reach greater economies of scale they share.

If changing from a non-sport to a sport there is a difference in airbags (the shape is not even close to the same. The airbags in sport, M sport and //M are the same.

Hope that helps,

-M
