BMW Nav and no need USB Ipod options for music
Does the 2009 Nav system for 1 series have built in Harddrive to load MP3? If that's the case I can save $350 options on the USB Ipod options and spent $2000 on the Nav system right?? How do I load MP3 to the harddrive if I don't have the USB Ipod options? I am trying to go one or the other

I have the iDrive and iPod connection. I loaded a USB flashdisk with some MP3 music and tried to load them onto the hard disk (there is one in the Nav system, as that is where the Nav data is stored). I could play the music on the USB drive, but it would not load onto the hard disk, referencing a usb port in the glove compartment, which I have not found yet.
To answer your question though, you should be able to load music onto the NAV hard disk from a port in the glove box if you don't order the iPod port. I listen to book on CD a lot, and have started loading them onto an iPod to listen to them, so I can get the CD's back to the library on time.

Since we're already talking about the NAV system in here, I went to the dealer yesterday to finally check out the 135i up close and personal (ordering within the next month).
I saw in the brochure that the NAV system allows you to interface with your bluetooth phone, is that included with the system or you still have to get the BMW Assist separately to have the bluetooth capability? It doesn't mention needing any other options in the brochure. |

The bluetooth option is nice though. I keep my iPhone in my pocket, push the phone icon on the wheel, and scroll through my most recent calls. I usually am just calling home, wife's cell, or the office from the car.
I was told you can program the keys on the front of the radio to dial numbers automatically, as well use voice to dial numbers. I have not gotten around to these to try yet.

The iPod USB is under the center arm rest near the holder for the iPod.
The USB for loading onto the HDD is in the upper right corner of the glove box. You have to almost stand on your head to see it. If you take the USB route to load your MP3's, make sure and have a flash drive with 8GB of music so that you can do the transfer exactly once. Each transfer creates a new directory called USBx, and multiple transfers will organize your music into USB1, USB2, etc., very annoying. The manual warns you that you should plan to drive awhile during an 8GB transfer since it may take some time! The iPod option is nice in that you can access by Genre, etc. As mentioned, BMW Assist enables bluetooth and you can program the radio buttons to call home, etc. Programming is pretty easy, just set up the iDrive to do the function you want and press and hold the button in. I think the iPod is worth it, but I'm also glad I got BMW Assist along with the convenience package (concierge services, annual updates, etc). |
