Tire advice

Hi all
I really need new tires, the current run flats are knackered!

I have 8.5" VMR 710's. car is not lowered.

What sizes should I be looking at?

225/40/18
255/35/18

Or

235/40/18
255/35/18

What tires do people recommend I get?
I don't track my car, so I don't need ultra sticky tires, I want something that is better than the run flats with good mileage.

I was looking at Conti 3's for around $1500 fitted

Cheers

Hard to go past Mich pilot super sports. Landed mine 22,000kms ago for about $1,000 from tire rack. Still have plenty of tread left. I'd estimate at least another 10,000 to 15,000 Kim's.

I recall reading that the same tire comes as OEM fitment to one of the latest Ferrari's, which is a good endorsement.

do you track your car? I was hoping for more than 35K Km's.

anyone know if 235/40/18's will fit the front 8.5" fine?

Depends which tyre you get. For eg PSS and AD08 I'd stick with 225 but you may be able to squeeze a 235 RE-11 in. What are your offsets?

Nah mate, no tracking - just the occassional spritied driving. Guys on the US forums are reporting some very high milage on these tires.

But the softer the compund the lower the milage. As i understand it - that is what makes the MPSS a stand out. Sticky tire / tyre with great milage.

Pretty sure I will be ordering the same again next year. And at $1,000 landed - you can't go wrong !

Tirerack doesn't ship Michelin to Aus anymore though, you can't get them at that price anymore, more like closer to $2,000

Assuming a 45 offset on the front you should be able to get a 235 on the front with some camber. More for AD08's or star specs etc. Big issue with the 45's if hitting the shock or the spring mount as clearance is ultra slim. So you may end up needing spacers and rolling or pulling.

I can get a set of AD08's installed for $1448
I can also get a set of Conti 3's installed for $1208

I assume I'll get much better mileage on the Conti's, but the AD08's will have better grip in the dry?

decisions, decisions!

what sort of mileage are people getting on the AD08's?

Down the cheaper end of the spectrum, I fitted Hankook Ventus V12 evo's this time last year, and couldn't be happier with the tyres. No track- street and highway only. I kept to the stock sizes of 215/40/18's on the front and 245/35/18's on the rear. I have the impression that the nice low-speed turn-in on my car might be in part due to running the narrower tyre in front. Lots of grip dry and wet, stopping is great, they're quiet, and comfort is good. An excellent value for money tyre.

Only gripe I have is with Hankook Australia. They offer a warranty on their ultra high performance tyres, and I had cause to access it after I hit a deep pothole on the Pacific Highway in April last year at 110 km/h, fracturing the sidewall on the front passenger side. The most charitable I can be is to say that their QC systems aren't set up to cope with warranty claims. However, after being bloody-minded persistent for more than four months, I eventually got my money refunded for a brand new tyre. Hopefully, having me on their back has caused them to improve their service.

How many kms do people get out of a set of tyres?
I've never got anywhere near that! Even on cars I haven't tracked.

I think "normal" tire life for our cars that are pushing 400 PS is about ~20K to 25K kms. At least that is what I have seen. I don't do any track events, but I have done my fair share of top speed runs.

The AD08s are great tyres. I have just gone through a set (well, rear pair anyway)
The rears lasted me nearly 20,000kms (a few track days, few trips to the drag strip etc) but the fronts are still going pretty strong.

If you're not going to be tracking the car, go with the Contis.

Stick to 225s on the front. Again, if you're not tracking the car why worry about risking the tyres not fitting when 225s fit just fine

Even when Tirerack shipped to Aus I think the Michelins were a bit more than $1k. The tyres themselves were over 1k.. then add shipping... then some people got customs duty, some didn't.

I have my Hankook RS3's for sale. Have around 95% tread left and are an excellent tyre and good tread wear rating. Have a read up on them. PM if you have any Q's.

I have pzeros on the rear of mine and they are almost gone after 10,000kms! The left rear is the worst. I guess the Procede and TC off can't but help. The fronts are the same and I've got 16k on those and they are still only 50% worn at worst.

Haven't seen what they are selling for now, but I recall the 4 came in at just under the GST threshold - Invoiced at AUD 950 and shipping was about AUD 200 I recollect. So landed at $1,150. Xrate was a little more favourable when I did it as well which helped.

Such a great deal. Shame it can't be repeated. After fitting I think it worked out at $312 a corner.

At the time, I recall ringing around locally - obviously not to the right places. Of the 3 places that even bothered to call be back with a quote ( due to staggered fitment, the one's I spoke to didn't stock them ), the cheapest was close to $900 a corner. No wonder people buy on line

David.... If you get 30,000ks from your tyres then you driving too soft buddy.... Especially knowing the way your wife drives, you must be really driving soft to compensate for the way she tears them up...... Just saying!!

I ended up getting Conti 3's, 225/40/18 & 255/35/18.

Mitch @ TyrePower in Hawthorn really looked after me, especially since I was an existing customer - as I purchased my VMR rims from them back in May.

Mitch and the guys there are really passionate about performance cars and car enthusiasts and go the extra mile to help out.

I strongly recommend them!!!!!!!!!!! A+++++
