2002 turbo
Lost in this discussion is the 2002tii, which came with mechanical fuel injection and upped engine performance and suspension/brakes.
Best year for any 2002 is 1973, as a change in the head allowed for removal of most pollution control devices. It's also the last year before they had to add shock absorbent bumpers, which increased weight. |

Well it does perform well. Traps 109+ mph, .94 on the skid pad and stops really quick, quicker than a 1M by a few feet.
I would have loved to take one for a test drive or at least sit down on the inside. I could care less if it has a auto over a DCT. I don't see why all the hate because of that. Maybe they went with the auto since it holds power better and now technology has caught up and made it possible to make a auto perform the same or better than a DCT (hint hint; C7 Z06). I was never a BMW guy until now with my 135i so I have no input on the 2002, honestly I was think the year 2002. |

The 1er Coupe is the homage car for the 2002. Haven't read a 2 series brochure, but the 1 series dealer brochure has a two page spread about the 2002.....making it clear that the 1er is the modern 2002.
Hence, the creation of Valencia Orange/Sedona Red Metallic (i.e. Inka Orange)

It really is not about comparing the 1 series to the 2002. More, it is what they represent. When the 2002 arrived, there was nothing like it anywhere. it was a revelation. You had a choice of Detroit muscle, lumbering sedans , or 2 seat sport cars like MG etc. BMW has repeatedly tried to recapture that 2002 magic. I recall the intro of the e30 318is, it was constantly compared to the 2002. I drove a 2002 nearly 500,000 miles. 25 plus years. Yes, a half million miles. When I sold it it was a show winner and I got 10K more than I paid for it.
I understand the 2002 driving experience. For over 10 of those 25 years I also had a very strong blueprinted 73 tii. Also a show winner, and extremely strong runner. Now it is a "11 135i. Truly a great car, likely to be in the garage for a very long time. It is also a revelation , but in a different way. Even other BMW owners ask me what it is. The 2002 was unique for its time. So is the 1. Forget the clueless sales geeks, most of them do not know what a 2002 is. The 135 is Certainly fast, though not as involving or as tossable as the tii, but still a perfect choice for those that understand. A huge technological leap from the 2002 as befits 45 years of progress , but still the same conceptually. It is a basic car, but a serious one too. Very far culturally from what the 2 is , the 1 is the last of the breed. Note the reflection of the tii in the second pic. The 02 went to New Mexico, the tii also provided capital gains and it went to a fine home in Florida. The 135 is not going anywhere, and I hope to someday find the perfect optioned 128 out of warranty.

^that Sienna Braun 2002 above reminds me of the one I had 3 years ago. In fact one of the big reasons I love the 135 is that it reminds me of the 2002 in many ways. I sold the 2002 and bought a 64 Belair, then sold the Belair and bought my 50 Ford. Now I wanna sell the 50 Ford and go full circle back to a 2002 hahaha.
Here's a pic I snapped the fist day I had my 135 and came across some dudes 2002 in a parking lot: |

My brother bought a brand new 2002 in Fjord Blue (like in the pic shown) back in 1975.. With A/C no less... And I've been a bimmerphile ever since.

I still have my book from my 2008. They're nice, leatherbound books with duplicate vin plates for your car. I've seen some people sell them on the forum or on ebay, not sure what I'll do with mine. Maybe I'll let you look at it or check it out one day like a 1addicts library. =P
They had a whole series of videos too which I think are still up on youtube somewhere from 2008 describing the design and engineering of the 1-series, inspired by the 2002. Yet, now they're pulling the same comparison with the 2-series? Only thing the 2 series has in common with the 2002 is that they both have 2's in their names. |

Brings back memories. I don't know how many times I watched that euro trash d-bag's video back in 2008 while deciding on the car and then waiting 3 months for it to get here or to finally see one in person.
Good find! I'd never seen that one before which was interesting. I just wish he could have at least been a LITTLE more enthusiastic when he pulled off the sheet instead of just nonchalantly been.."so....this is it...." What's funny when I watch his video and unveiling though is how perfect the size and proportions of the car look (to me) compared to everything they're making now which seem huge and bloated. When you park our cars near any of their newer cars, they look like tiny dwarfs. I just don't see why the car needs to be one inch bigger than it already is. It's perfect. Fine, was perfect until the 1M came along. =P |

Interesting that BMW is still using the 2002 as the 'spiritual predecessor' to the 2 Series.
While I still have not seen the 2 Series in flesh yet, and while I don't think it looks as bad as other people here say (IEDEI, Greg ) - actually the M Performance version is sexy IMHO - it just does not have that old school 'vibe' for the lack of word and vocabulary that the E82 has. Marketing...

I got that book for my one year anniversary. It has lots of great pictures and information. A real collectors item for any 1addict. One of the perks of being a "Year One of the 1" owner. With that said, I'm glad I traded my 2008 in for a 2011 with DCT.

Wow! Would love to get my hands on one of these books. Probably impossible to find, though. Guess I'll scour eBay every couple of months, lol...
