Winter Tires and Rim's

Hi All,

Anyone started to think about the SNOW yet?

I'm trying to decide what RIMS and Tires for the Winter.. I need you help..

The car won't see any SNOW I will be driving my other car, but I would like to take it out on Sunny days. I just don't want to get caught off guard.

I going to have hugh withdrawals not driving it every day in the winter...lol

Please let me know if there is going to be a group by in the GTA..

First off, don't get the TPMS as we do not use them in Canada so that saves you a bunch. The shipping is expensive but all in, it'll be cheaper than buying in most places in Canada as you can see by Mic's post.

You have to remember you getting 18" alloy wheels and 18" snow tires. These are not cheap in Canada.

And by the way the broker fee for UPS is 50$ here :iono: that's another 30 to 50$ you can save by doing it yourself (here in Mtl the UPS Warehouse is across the street from the Border Services Agency ) so as soon as you have your tracking number call UPS and tell them that you will do the paper work for BSA. Get the paper at UPS go to BSA max 30 min. and it's done

yup have to agree with that... i had 18in winters and 17in winters the following season on my sti and it was much better in the deep snow (anything over 4 inches) with the 17's

Thanks Stefan for your option - is there a reason you went with those tires? anyone else have a 17" option? Maybe we should put a few tires and sizes up and see which one everyone would be most interested in getting?

just as an FYI
I ordered my winter rims and tires from tire rack (actually before i even took delivery of the car!) and they came within a week. Amazing service and no extra hidden charges.

The WinterSport 3D's are very nice snows. I've ordered a set. I had the previous M3's and they were very good and the 3D's are supposed to be better. Only thing I didn't like about the M3's was that after 3 seasons they started to get quite noisy. Hopefully the 3D's will be better.

Stefan..how long of a drive is it down to the USA from youer house? I got some tires from Tirerack delivered to a receving agent in the USA (Blaine Washington) for $20 and they took delivery for me and helpd them for me. Then the shipping was free and the gu at the border let me thru without making any duty claim (yes I told him I had tires). I am going to do the same but I am waiting to see if www.discounttiredirect.com has a better price as they have some $$$savings on a set of 4 tires once in a while. I am always shocked at how much cheaper the tires/wheels are at tirerack or discount tire in the US copared to Canada.

I'm in Canada so it's a bit of a haul.. but I'll definitely look into it. I chose those wheels since they look similar to 264s. Maybe I'll go with 17" and no TPMS to save some money.

i am going to pick up my 1 around October as told by my dealer,and i have been looking for 17" setup, do all OEM 17" fit the 135 brakes? or is there specific offset i have to look for when shopping for 17"

I strongly suggest going with 17" winter wheels and tires. 18" for winter is really not required and kind of an overkill? For my 135, I got 17" Sport Edition KM11 with Dunlop WinterSport M3 from TireRack....from Gill. I shopped around some local stores and TireRack came out to be cheapest, and that includes shipping, brokerage and currency conversion. Hit up with Gill, great guy and he'll take care of you.

I did the same set-up as Peejay but with Blizzak WS-60. 18" winter tires is not necessary, 17" is what you want you get. Talk to Gill, he's got all the info you need.:thumbup:

17's are definitely better for deep snow but if the snow is deep I'm not driving my 1. Even in colder areas of Canada the vast majority of the winter it is either clean roads or wet roads.

When you go to 17's you've changed aspect ratio and therefore their driving feel and accompanied with the lower feel of snows it seemed too much of a drop to me so I'm going wth 18's and a snow tire that is good in the dry and wet.

I just didn't want to feel that my 1 was completely crippled for the 5 months it has winter tires on it. Just my opinion.

just curious since I should probably start looking into winter tires as well. From what I see here seems like everyone are getting tires thru Tirerack, is it really cheaper than say going to FountainTire or something in Canada ?

$1600 CDN shipped to my door, mounted and balanced is a pretty good deal to me. Tires are awesome, and the rims will look hot even in the cold winter season. So yes, TireRack is definately worth it. Hit up Gill for whatever you need.

tire rack can be cheaper by HALF. We were shopping for a winter tire for my girlfriends mini and tire rack was $116 and fountain tire was 239. Tire rack also includes mounting and balancing and fountain tire does not. At fountain tire this was $20 per tire. A HUGE savings when you added it all up. (these were goodyear ultra eagle 205/50R16)

Tire trends in vancouver had good prices on sport edition rims. Check out their website but make sure you call them to see if they have the tire you want actually in stock. Just cause it says on their website in stock - it doesn't actually mean it ?!
