Hood Pins: Where to install the pin?

---

So, my iCarbon hood came in a couple days ago. I've been considering installing Aerocatch hoodpins (watching this video convinced me). I track my car quite a bit.

Anyway, I see that some other 1Addicts have installed these and my question is: Where do you mount the actual pin in the engine bay? I'm not talking about the latch on the hood, I'm talking about the pin that comes up from the engine and is bolted to the engine bay.

From what I can see, there is hardly and metal in the upper most part of the engine- especially in areas where a hood pin might look best. Here's what I mean:

(image removed... see update above)

So when I see the following images, I'm wondering- where could that pin actually be attached to?

When I look in the engine bay, I see mostly empty space above the headlights.

Thoughts?

Every car in those pictures has the pins installed wrong. The thinnest part of the latch needs to face down. The red one is backwards. And I'm not sure why the others are sideways. The point is for the wind to help contribute (or at least not hinder) the latches staying down and flush. Hence the name aero catch. Aircraft use this method of latching all over them.

I am curious now too as to where they mounted the pins!

I would contact WheelSTO because they are the only ones I've seen do it right.

The radiator frame is metal not plastic as you pointed in your pic. And yes the narrow part of the tear should point down but the vents in the Icarbon hood don't allow for this.
If you look for the pictures of wsto engine bay you can see were they installed there's and that's were I put mine.

The first ones are wrong but as long as it isnt at a exact 90 degree angle or greater then its ok.

Look at aero catch's site.

Walked out just now and took another look. You're right, it IS aluminum. (See update to original post). So that's the obvious mounting point for the pins.

Thanks!

Hey Kirk... I believe you can buy them on amazon, ebay, vendors on this forum... Depends on your brand. There is one that are bottom mounted and top mounted. The pics you see are top mounted. Dont misunderstand me though because bottom mounted still shows the latch but the bolts are mounted underneath as opposed to the top. Bottom mounts are CLEANER but you need someone with steady hands for a PRECISION CUT

Also I heard that they were more prone to ripping out. Also I dont care who it is I wouldnt trust them cutting for bottom mount pins..

Yup, not unless if they had another iCarbon hood at their shop just in case they mess up! Haha

I don't trust the bottom mounted ones (teeny little screws going 1/2 way through a THIN carbon fiber hood? Blogger please.)

I bought mine from http://www.turnermotorsport.com seemed to be one of the only sites that seem to have accurate model numes, numbers, and descriptions for each type. Even better than Aerocatch's own site (which is terrible).

Yeah, that's the ones. I'm not going to install them myself- all I have is a drill and you really need to do some precision cutting. The cut has to be pretty exact and if you go a couple cm too far... well look and see how close it is:

Making too large a hole will make it so the screws have very little lip to hang on to.

Side note: For those interested in doing an aerocatch install, this DIY looks great:
