At the car wash yesterday after a busy week, a 128i convertible pulls in next to my 135i so I start up a conversation with the driver who appears to be about 40 years old - "How do you like your 1 series?". His reply included comments about the 6 MT and torque plus good MPG, and then he says "It's not my car, it's my Dad's" - he loaned it to us for a drive to Austin (about 180 miles one way). He was getting the car detailed before he returned it to his Dad. That must make the owner 60+ years old, which puts him in my neck of the woods (68). Nice job son! Great car Dad!

What was your plan of action, and why?

Me? I drive 60 miles a day to work, so purchasing new didn't make sense. I plan to keep my 128 as a daily, and hopefully by next year, get myself into a 996 (hopefully with IMSB done already). 35 meticulous owners seem to keep garaged during winter (for those who suffer), and 128 push it year round (It is a "woman" car though, ha).
OP, put a poll in this thread please!

I'm 26, bought CPO when I was 24--site unseen, shipped it from NC to Ohio to get color/trim package I wanted. First big boy car after college. Never buying site unseen again, very exciting, extremely scary. Drove it last winter when I worked 2 miles from home, bought a Quattro to abuse this year as its 45 miles one way now (NE Ohio). Drive a lot in summer, I've now have 50k miles of driving enjoyment under my belt in it.

44- 11' 128i e88 off lease with 28k a year ago. Had my eye on a 1er since they came out but dealer never would have one instock when I would try to check them out. 2nd BMW last one was 01' e46 great commuter it was nicknamed "the Rabbit" cause it ran like a scared rabbit. Plan to drive 1er until 2022 and hope non-turbos return to market by then.

43, retired military. First Bimmer to date. So far my baby has given me enough pleasure to shake a stick at and then some. I have owned 12 cars that range from Datsun to Ford. Plan on keeping my BMW until the wheels fall off. And then I will just get new wheels for it! Currently unmolested but looking forward to adding black lines, carbon fiber rockers, carbon painted spoiler, CAI, and Halo's. Maybe black the roof and add some bronze rims.

34, My first BMW and a gift to myself after driving an SUV for the last 6 years with a civic SI coupe prior to that.

I will drive her as long as she stays as fun as she is now. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I am 60. Bought my 2011 135i 6MT brand new. I drive it three seasons and store it during these dang-blasted horrible Ohio winters. However, my 2002 winter beater Mazda-rati is not the most reliable sled on the road, so I mount winter wheels and snows on the 135 in December just in case. Turns out I need to drive it a few times each winter.

Like ALL of my previous cars, I bought this one because it is incredibly FUN to drive. And so far (38,000 miles) it is the MOST fun driver I have owned. For all you young whippersnappers, here is the list of close finishers from my early years, all of which had manual transmissions... 1970 Opel GT, 1974 Opel Manta Rally, 1978 VW Rabbit, 1980 Mazda RX7, 1992 Mazda MX3 GS.

You give 'em hell, old-timer (I'm 55). Previous: 1972 Monte Carlo, 1972 Cutlass, 1982 Scirocco, 1990 G60 Corrado, 1983 533i, 1992 VR6 Corrado, 1996 328is. All MT once I left Detroit. Winter wheels and snows on the VR6 and E36. Drove the VR6 and most recently E36 for as long as they would allow, it will be interesting to see if I out-last my E82 (kind of weird to wonder if this is my last fun car, getting old is bewildering).

Over the years, I had four V-Dubs, but I always loved the look of the Scirocco more than any other. The Gen II was great, but the current European Scirocco R with 261 BHP really gets me going.

I had gold basket BBSes on my Scirocco. I totally loved that car (dark metallic green with tinted windows, it was absolutely gorgeous). It couldn't get out of its own way, but I always felt special driving it. But what is this from Europe? Holy crap, is that real?

BTW, your signature is amazing.

Yes, the Gen III Scirocco exists although not in a form that is sold in the US or even importable into the US. Before I bought my 135, I spent a few weeks trying to figure out a way to either bypass the US emission regulations or have a new Scirocco modified to pass them. No affordable way to accomplish this, so I got my 135 instead. I have not been disappointed at all, but I have to admit I am still moved by that big beautiful back end on the Scirocco.
