How many coats can I apply?
I recently bought Blackfire Midnight sun wax. I have since applied 4 coats over a 5 week period. Am I just rubbing off the previous coat or am I adding extra protection? I also purchased natty's blue paste wax (was inexpensive and heard it was a good long lasting wax) Was planning to add a coat of this on top of the other. Maybe a detailer here knows if I am doing any harm or defeating the purpose of protecting my paint.
Oh, I should mention the car looks great. I have been stopped twice recently by strangers thinking the car was new. thanks in advance for any advice. |

I'm not a professional detailer, but I don't think that you are adding much by having additional coats of the Midnight Sun wax. You will have additional benefits with a base coat (or two) of Blackfire Wet Diamond followed by a coat (or two) of the Midnight Sun...the Blackfire "fire-over-ice" combo. I currently just have a single coat of Wet Diamond on the car and am very happy. I might let the current coat cure (needs a couple of days) then add a second coat and then do a little carnuba wax. I have heard that a desriminating enthusiast can tell the benefit of the wax over the sealant, but the benefits are subtle.

You're not harming your paint, but you're really not doing much extra for it either. Also keep in mind that two layers does not equal double the protection: the layers act as one homogeneous sacrificial barrier and it degrades all together through things like UV rays.
My advice is to keep on with the excellent upkeep, but space the waxing sessions to once every three weeks at most. I usually try to wax my baby once a month or so to make sure I don't have any lapses in protection. |

Thanks for the input.
I must think that I am adding additional protection from the extra coats. Although, I am sure its not 4 layers worth of protection. I have P21s also. It's a great wax. It is easy on and off also dries clear if you touch other parts of the car. But, it does not last as long. Will be spacing out my waxes once a month. thanks. |

A second application is always a good idea as it ensures complete surface cover. As another layer is added surface friction, pressure and the solvent used as a carrier system remove a percentage of the preceding layer. It may be possible to increase the applied product thickness but there comes a time when you are removing more than you are adding.
There is a method used (spit shining) in which you neutralize the solvents and its then possible to ‘layer’ waxes, due to their chemical composition there are very few sealants that can be successfully layered. |
