Can newer model outside mirror be installed on older model?

I have a 2009 128i and the outside mirrors are fine but not really feeling the round shape, and feel the newer model year which has a larger square like mirrors are better looking.
Do we know if the newer model mirrors will fit an 2009 model? if so, will connections be the same and will they have full functionality: dimming, power folding.

Thanks for your reply.

They have the same footprint so I doubt that fitment will be an issue at all. FWIW, I would go with the 1M mirror before the "dumbo ears" of the 2010+ cars.

Keep the 09 version not a big fan on the dumbo ears at all.

wow I'm surprised everyone is against me on this one, but great to read your opinions.
I will need to have a closer look at the newer style mirrors to better make my decision.
thx

The 1M mirrors are the M3 mirrors, which can be easily purchased in far more colours than the 1M came in. I've been seriously thinking about this, as Space Grey is available in the M3.

The later model 1 series mirrors are the 3 series mirrors. BMW cheapened the car by eliminating a special part. The early 1 series mirrors are unique and nicer looking IMHO. The later ones are bigger and perhaps more functional. I hadn't thought about 1M mirrors but that might make a nice upgrade.

The old style mirrors absolutely look better but they are much smaller and provide a lot less visibility on the newer mirrors. I would not change to the newer mirrors for cosmetic reasons.

The 1M mirrors share the glass and cover caps with the m3's but you do need a specific outside mirror. The color matched cover caps come from BMW primed and will have to be painted.
