clutch delay valve

Does anybody know if the Canadian versions of the 1 Series also have the clutch delay valve? I only recently got my 128 manual and I don't notice anything odd about the clutch. I have read a lot of threads about removing the clutch delay valve and was wondering if I am just too new to the car or am maybe the Canadian cars are different?

Yes they do. I recently removed mine on my 135i. Maybe the previous owner already changed it ?

Me neither, although I eventually removed it to see what all the fuss is about. I still don't know ...

If you are happy with the clutch, why change anything? I have a feeling it is one of those mods that people do just so they say they have done a mod. But then maybe their clutch foot is more sensitive than mine. A true blind back to back test would be interesting because my general impression is that I preferred the clutch with it installed. I have certainly driven other cars where their CDVs result in ridiculously sluggish clutch behaviour, but I don't sense that in our cars.

I put in an M3 CDV which had a noticeably larger diameter, so I guess its similar to no CDV at all.

It's a subtle change, I noticed it most when driving aggressively and the clutch would continue to slip even if I let it out quickly, but after removing the CDV no problems.

I still don't think the clutch itself is very progressive, and that may be a bit worse than with the CDV installed so it's a compromise....I just want a simple linearly engaging clutch. I can get the car to drive smoothly but it takes a bit of concentration....

Hummm...... so it is not just me! As I mentioned I find the clutch fine just the way it is. Maybe if I drove it a lot harder I would notice something?
I also think that the BMW engineers know what they are doing and they would not add something for no reason. I can see the bean counters taking something out and hoping that customers wouln't notice, but engineers adding something for no reason? I can't see it.

If you do any kind of aggressive driving you'll notice I would say. BMW and most manufacturers put them into cars to help save the driveline and clutch from extra shock...but it can lead to an unnatural clutch feel.

It's a cheap change, so you could always switch back if you didn't like it.

I guess it depends on your manual trans. experience. Been driving manual trans. for over 40 years and that CDV is the worst thing for clutch feel I have ever experienced. As stated above, it's there for the nimrods who don't know what they're doing to cushion shock to the drivetrain. There are larger diameter replacements available for about $25. or you can just remove it. Either way, much better feel and engagement.

Did you guys remove it yourselves or is there a shop experienced with doing it in the GTA for those who live there..

If it makes it easier to heel toe on the track I might consider it. Its one of those things where I've been driving this car this way for 8 years, do I really want to change it at this point but I've always been curious because I do notice excessive engagement at times. What does it feel like and how would I get used to it?

Here is an analogy - having the CDV is like sleeping on a mattress with a pea underneath it. Removing the CDV is like removing the pea. Since you know the pea is gone when you remove it, I am sure you will sleep better. Of course if you have been sleeping on mattresses without peas for 40 years and are outright allergic to peas, your relief will be profound and immediate. Less so in other cases.

The transformation is immediate and not psychosomatic. Ever feel like you are just a little off on the timing of a shift? A bit clunky?

That is the CDV only passing a very metered flow of fluid. YOU don't control the actual rate of engagement or disengagement. That is controlled by the tiny hole in the CDV.

Remove that and you have total control of the rate of engagement.

You can sidestep the clutch and rip the guibo and axles apart ( I am sure that is why this is in there).

Or you can drive correctly.

It is a very simple job. If you can bleed brakes you can do this.

My post on it....

I have 128 w/6MT Sp Pkg and I occasionally track car at Calabogie. And, I've been driving manuals longer than anyone here. I find the shifting fine as is. I like to spend my money on tires and suspension.

Nice thing is you don't have to spend a dime.

And seriously. You don't know what you are missing.

It is a a night and day difference.

Really? Well I've got 51 years changing gears and the CDV is an abomination.
