The Xers are more an "all road" car rather than an off roader. I don't need a serious off roader, but do use 4wd a bit, The only hassle with my Liberty has been ground clearance. Oh for a turbo Outback. Should also note that I would prefer a manual. Just me being an old codger I guess, but autos belong in Jags and Mercs and cars owned by amputees!!

Just meandered up to my local BMW dealer.
There will be 5 X1 models: petrol rwd Base diesel rwd petrol 4wd deisel 4wd twin turbo diesel 4wd. Only base model is available in manual. Prices start at 47900 before on roads and options for base and rise to $60000 fir the ttdiesel. Add on roads and the compulsory "options" of metallic paint and a sunroof and the ttdiesel is $75000 on road. OUCH. Oh well. Another Subie is looking more likely.
