I mean does the 1M have a 12v socket that a cigarette lighter goes into. for things that plug into cigarette lighters such as ipod charger or external nav systems that require power?

The brochure says it has a 12V socket in the arm rest back where the usb is for an ipod. It also seems to have the same cover over what could be a ash tray/cigarette lighter at the front of the console but I don't see that discussed in the brochure. My 128i has two, one at the front and one under the arm rest.

There is definitely one under the arm rest. My car had a blank panel at the bottom of the center console during ED. At any rate, to answer the question, there is definitely one. |

I don't have mine yet, but I believe this thread has it.

This should have 3 pictures from my 2009 128i convertible. I believe the console in the 1M is essentially the same as mine but BMW has had several different ways to do the area at the front of the console. I believe all have had the 12V outlet under the arm rest and the 1M brochure indicates it has it too. Some time after mine was built (2010?) BMW went to a tray instead of the "smoker package" at the front of the console. Mine has the "smoker package". The pictures of the 1M interior has the door so I think it may have this too. If not, you could buy the parts from BMW, remove the console, and put it in. It is not that tough the take the console out, I did it to put the cup holder you get with iDrive in and there are good instructions in the DIY part of this website. Here is a linke to the RealOEM page where they illustrate the smoker package:

Option 493 ("Ablagenpaket" i.e. stow away package) includes an extra 12V socket in the boot ("12V Steckdose im Gepäckraum"). Over here this option costs EUR 111.57 + VAT.
I assume that if you combine this option with the "Ski Bag" option (option 468), you can easily guide the recharger cable connected to your electronic device (e.g. a DVD player used by your child on the back seat) from inside the 1M into the boot through the ski-guide-through-armrest in the rear seats (not sure about that, but in my M3 such compartment is available: armrest offering direct access to the boot can be opened despite the presence of the child seat, however got to stretch and push a bit). Personally I ordered full option, so got both. |

If you want the front of the console 12V outlet like I have, you can buy a "smoker package" from BMW, remove your console, and put it in. Power can come from the 12V outlet it has, you will have access to the wires when you pull the console. It's kind of a mess to have to do this with a nice new car but it is fully possible. The hardest part of pulling the console is getting the shift knob off. You have to pull really hard.
