How many tires/rims have you had damaged?

When posting please specify who your tire insurance/plan is with so we can get an idea of which ones are best! Thanks.

I am trying to weigh in whether I want to spend another 2150 on my 1M for the dealerships wheel/tire hazard protection coverage.

How many or often (with or without coverage) have you guys gone through tires or bent rims due to potholes etc.

In 8 months I had 1 tire replaced on my 335i due to a pothole causing the rim to put a nice cut into the sidewall of the tire. This however was through the tire sales place and only cost me $45 for a new one. I realize the 1M tires are in teh 3's for fronts and 4's for rear.....

I had damage repaired on 3 of the four rims with one tire replaced. However, to get them to repair the damage was a nightmare. They'd say anything to get me NOT to have it repaired by saying, I had to go back to the dealer I bought the car from to "it doesn't cover cosmetics." Both of which were incorrect and I ended up going back to the dealer I purchased the car from which was over a hr away. They also tried to get out of the cosmetics repair despite the coverage clearly stating it covers cosmetics!!! I had to call BMW North America about both dealers to get one of them to perform the repairs. In the end, I feel it's a huge scam. If I buy it again, I will be sure to lecture whomever is trying to sell it to me on what happened and how it's a scam. I find it disgusting that I live across the street from a BMW dealer but I have to drive a hour one way to get my rims fixed by another BMW dealer!

Wow thats a story....

one plan i looked at only covers a $3k max over the life of the plan. I'm not so sure its worth 1550 to hope you cover yourself for another 1500. Probably better off putting the cash away just in case (knock on wood!)

I weighed this option last year when I picked up my 135i last year and I decided not to do it. It's more money up front for "insurance" that the dealer is going to give you a hard time about. Also, it may be through a 3rd party so that can be more of a headache. I'd recommend putting aside $1,000 in an account and put in $20/month for wheel/tire problems.

Im not looking to buy tires, I was simply looking for feedback on users utilization of the insurance plans or lack thereof. I am purchasing a 1M anyways so they are likely different

Curb rash damage only in 3 years.
I don't think it's worth $2000+ unless you live in a city that has very bad roads. You are more at risk with a 1M because it's a 19" wheel with an even lower sidewall on the tire than the 135i 18"s. If I had been able to get a 1M in the color I wanted I would have later bought a set of used 135i wheels for winter and then put big bucks on some HRE P40s for show.

I can only speak for myself but I am sure glad I have tire insurance for our 135i.
We have hit 2 pot holes...the first on a major highway last spring and thankfully had the run flats as it easily could have caused an accident. It was the right front tire without wheel damage. The second time I thought the hole would swallow me up and it was tire and rim this time. Costs for both incidents was over 1400 dollars. The insurance only cost us less than that...just food for thought. I dread the day the insurance is over. We have a little more than 3 years of a 5 year plan.

On our 335 in five years and a quarter of a million miles, we damaged nine or ten tires and rims. Most of the time it was just the tire, but we replaced two rims and had another repaired. Those were the summer ones, bent one winter rim but never replaced it. Driving into New York City every day meant a ton of pot holes. The low profile tires did not like potholes. We were not offered insurance for the wheels and tires when we bought it.

It was a no brainer for us to get the insurance.

We have 65k on the 135, and had one tire and rim replaced because of a pothole. We were expecting to go through more but we switch to the snows earlier now and the runflats seem to do a much better job of handling things that would bubble the old tires.

I would double check the price, our cost was well less than half that a couple years ago.

I think it's worth mentioning when I had three of my rims repaired they did a great job but they did it w/o ever removing the wheel from the car. The problem doing that is they only cleaned the brake dust etc off the outer part of the rim and when they did a final spray finish on the wheel they sprayed the brake dust too so now it's a permanent fixture of the rim. Yes, I have brake dust and hand prints in said brake dust that has a nice clear coat or what ever they used. I can not get it off chemically or what I have available mechanically. SO that led to yet another phone call to get this corrected which will have to wait until next yr. I have the absolute worst luck with my car. On a side note, the body shop repaired my bumper and trunk when my parking garage backed it into a pole but then gave me a nasty dent and scratch on the door, soaking wet trunk and 5 tail lights dead. I let the mess they made on the interior go since it was minimal compared to everything else. I'm still puzzled why they stole the lone quarter in my ash tray. Hard times I guess.....

2 tires, 1 rim. Only one tire was an OEM tire, the other was non-RFT and the rim was non-OEM. This is over 3 years and change of ownership.

One tire after going through a pot hole. Another got a nail stuck in it but I patched it (not at BMW).

And 1 rim a few weeks ago when the temperatures suddenly dropped, and I hit some ice with my summer tires on and hopped a curb.

All paid out of pocket it ended up costing about $600 total over three years to replace/repair everything that's happened to my wheels and tires. This includes the replacement Breyton rim that I haven't bought yet to replace my cracked rim. This obviously doesn't include replacing the tires when they wore out naturally. Also, I think the dealership will only repair your OEM items so if you want to upgrade to aftermarket rims or non-runflat tires, then you're out of luck. I wouldn't waste the money on the plan unless you're really an inattentive driver

On my end with the M one Front tire is $380 and the Rears are about $450+ a piece. I dont even want to think what the M rim costs. I understand attentive, but sometimes larger than normal potholes or large bumps in the road from drains', railroad crossings, transitions, contruction etc have their way of popping up unexpectedly.

Last winter i popped one tire on the 335 due to a bump in the road pushing the wheel into the rim and the rim taking a nice chunk out. only cost $45 thanks to having road hazard on non factory tires. This brand new M is a different story

Yeah, see that sucks. The stock Bridgestone RFTs in 18" can be found for about 300 bucks depending on where you look. The 1M tires are definitely more expensive due to size and the fact that they're better tires. Since most people on here switch out to non run flats, though, I don't think many people tend to get the insurance. Non RFTs are definitely much cheaper to replace.

As for rims, though, maybe it is worth the insurance. I know my 18" breyton rims are about 300 a pop as well, and they are a well known brand with a great built quality. But, BMW rims are expensive because they're BMW rims. The 19" BMW OEM rims would be a lot. My 17" BMW OEM winter rims were 300 each new, and that's for crappy 17 x 7 wheels. Though you'd have to lose probably 3 rims and tires to make up for the two THOUSAND dollar insurance policy! It's a tough choice, but I'm sure BMW specifically priced it so that through the law of averages, it would be just ever so slightly advantageous to get the insurance for the consumer, so they can keep raking in the dough from people who buy it and end up not needing it.

Thats what i was considering.... I was quoted about $1600 from an aftermarket company vs dealer for Tires and rims. and thats for 5 years or 75k miles.

It all depends on where/how often you drive. To spend that money on a tire/wheel insurance I hope you plan on getting your money's worth. Keep in mind, they usually have caps on the amount they dish out on a policy as a whole... And caps on every specific part of a repair...(mount balance, wheel repair, new wheel costs etc) most of them will only source reman wheels. Try and find someone to fix a curbed wheel for 75-125 dollars (basically someone in a truck with a spray can) the quality will show.

I work with these companies all day long and I myself have never spent the money on it... Never proved to be worth it with any car I've owned(knocking on wood).

My plan... Never drive into NYC, have 2-3 sets of wheels and tires, an account with tire rack, and work for a dealer.... That's my insurance.

Wheel insurance policies can be a pain to deal with.

Lol, unfortunately not all of us have the luxury of working at a dealer, having a dealer account, and extra sets of dubs!

I agree, the company who quoted me above did not state specific part caps, but did state a $3k payout cap. The challenge is weighing the likelihood of going through 4 tires in 5 years on NY/NJ roads and others up and down the east coast. I tend to drive me vehicles a lot, with love

I want to get a set of winter rims/tires as I dont believe the Mich Pilot sport PS2's are supposed to be any good in winter but dont think I can swing that for a little...

And yes, I DD my M!

I can only speak for myself but I am sure glad I have tire insurance for our 135i.
