New Software 2.48.2

Took my 128i automatic in for scheduled maintenance, and since it's still under warranty and maintenance, I gave them a list of every niggling thing.

One niggling thing, especially when is DS mode, on a cold morning it would idle a little inconsistently when at a stop (up and down revs at times). I figured it must be normal but why not mention it?

They kept the car overnight, to do a cold start in the morning, and sure enough, they decided to do some analysis.

They said they found SIB 12 21 12. It that a technical bulletin? If so, how can I look it up?

Anyway, they checked for faults, found none, no DME Fault, did a test plan to obtain a "diagcode" to program and update the software (per 12 21 12). They obtained diagcode D1214_B0000000_90_212. They programmed and updated the vehicle software include CAS with Software 2.48.2.

---

And now the fluctuation on cold start is solved. And, as I probably should have expected, all my custom settings are re-set (like having both doors open with one click on the fob).

But it also seems like the shift points changed a bit -- with D allowing higher revs before jumping up to the next gear. No complaints because I always thought it was a bit conservative and chose to us DS a lot. Now, DS is not necessarily my default in traffic, especially.

And at least one strange thing: The classic BMW temporary lane change signals that trips up people who first drive one..... appears deactivated. I didn't realize that was a setting. But this software flash update appears to have wiped it.

Anyway, anyone know where I can learn more about this software update? Of course the dealer wasn't too informed and couldn't even tell me what things like CAS and SIB stood for, let alone what was in the software....

You can reenable the triple blink indicator from the left side stalk behind the steering wheel in the settings menu.

Good to know. I suppose if I RTFM I would see that. Thanks for pointing it out.

It was strange thought because I thought new software would mean everything goes back to default and that triple indicator thing always seemed like the default.

Maybe there is a new default?

With the amount of coding I have, I would be absurdly angry if they reset my car.

I wasn't too upset because I have done no custom coding, but even just losing all my settings was tedious. But the cold weather cold engine idle is much better, which is very nice.

I have this problem... Will take it in and see about that update. My car idles strange and vibrate uncontrollably.

Good to know.

Yeah if its the same thing as mine there is the SIB (service information bulletin) 12-21-12 which explicitly covers this, and apparently the fix is "just" a software update to 2.48.2.

Actually, given how little the service advisors know about what the tech really did, maybe there's more to it than the software update....

Anyone know how I can see the details of the SIB? I see many others online, but this one doesn't appear to be published online yet.

Is this an blanket automatic update when the vehicle is in for service or only if you complain of a problem? Would be nice to know what version my 2009 is prior to taking it in and see if they do the update

Worth asking about. From what I have seen, many dealerships do what you ask, and not more. Some service reps will give you ideas, like: you're still under the maintenance plan and that allows us to replace the wiper blades annually -- do you want us to? And then they write on the invoice, "customer complained of squeaking blades." This leads me to believe you should ask or complain about rev fluctuations on cold starts, if you want the software update. I don't know whether there is a charge if you are out of warranty or maintenance coverage.
