Tail Light
Anyone have a recent SIB for replacing the tail lights? I have SIB 630310 but the dealer says there is a newer SIB out. We are fussing over replacing both tail lights instead of just the one unit that is out. I had the seals replaced last year but now one of the lights is out and dealer only wants to replace the one that is out although SIB 630310 indicates replace both even if only one is inoperative.

I just went thru the same situation. Seals replaced in Feb 2011 and the DSTL out in August 2011.
I spoke with a nice knowledgable guy and he indicated that BMW has changed they way they address the taillight defect. If after the seals are replaced, they can only address the failed unit. My point of view is that both would have been equally damaged/defective and since they were exposed to the hazardous seals. I've since filed a complaint with NHTSA as a safety feature malfunction/defect. Maybe you should, too. Personally, having a tail light assembly/lens replaced when the side-marker/taillight goes out is a bit excessive. I believe it's around $150 to replace the complete lens when the leds fail. I'm still pursuing getting the other tail light replaced...I don't give up easy. BTW...it took from WEDNESDAY morning till MONDAY of the next week for the tail light part to come in. My tech was off on Monday, so I had to wait until TUESDAY to pick the car up. 6 days for a burnt out light. ;( Glad I had some other things for them to fix...or in this case..."could not duplicate," or my patience would have been really worn out. I was unsuccessful in trying to get them to replace both. They had to order the part so I have to go back. Spoke with the Service Manager who explained the policy and it made some sense in that the seal replacement may work but given that one went out even after the repair, I agree it should be viewed as a safety issue and they should do both.
It was a little disconcerting in that he tried telling me that the tail lights were going out because of water leaking inside even after I told him it was because of a corrosive gas given off by the original seals (that is what the SIB says). He didn't want to listen. Irritating.

Have the same issue. Yesterday they replaced the defective tail light only, not both sides. Will be filing a complaint also.
It's the same BS they pulled when they recalled/replaced only 3 of the 6 injectors. Sure enouigh, 5 months later they had to replace the other 3 due to a hesitation problem. |
