Funny smell
So my friend who is a car enthusiast got in my car with me to go to lunch, and windows were down. As soon as I turned on my car, he said it smelled funny. He told me to go get my cat converters checked because it smelled like they were broken.
I have never noticed anything was wrong with my car. If something was wrong, wouldn't an engine light or something come on to tell me about it? Also, would an intake affect the cat converters at all or cat back exhaust? Thanks!

Maybe your O2 sensor? No codes?

Well, one time I got a check engine light but it went away as soon as I turned on my car again. I believe it was a loose gas cap or something minor but am unsure because I do not have a code reader.
If it was something like the O2 sensors or cat converter the light would stay on and not go away correct?

^^^No it would come on intermittently. Once you turn your car off for a while it would go away.....and then it would come back later. If you are just driving around town short distances you might not see it. But during longer drives it would come up...mine did/does the same thing until I get a chance to fix it.

Maybe it's an a/c leak coming from the vents, if so would need an evaporator. Kind of a sweet smell? Does the inside of your windshield get a film on it, or do you find yourself cleaning the inside more often than you think you should? Just a random thought...

Are we talking about a smell from inside the car or outside?
I would suspect outside bc your friend said "get your cats checked". Some cars can produce a sulfur smell as a by product from the cats. This is due to the amount of sulfur from the fuel you are using. most of the time this happens with a brand new engines and goes away with miles. Try switching fuel brands. IF we are talking about a smell from inside the car... I would suspec its mold in your HVAC system. When I run the ac in my car I always turn off teh ac before I arrive at my destination and never leave the recirc button on when I shot off the engine. That way nothing starts to grow inside the evaperator/HVAC box. They do sell various AC cleaning products. Dackel |

ALL the time. My interior windows always are all greasy and disgusting. My dad told me it was from driving with the windows down though.

I have an issue with the windows myself. I can't get them to come clean. There is always a frickn haze of some sort. I've tried everything. The AC seems to be fine.

Many times, it's the degassing of the plastic inside our cars.
Just imagine how nice it looks inside our lungs

Try using a special glass cleaner made to be used on car windows. Not just windex but something made by Sonax or P21S or Invisible Glass Cleaner. The film is caused from gassing of the pastics inside the car. |

I have the same problem with my windshield.... I can clean the crap out of it and within a week, it's hazed over.. If it is something to do with the material's inside the car releasing gasses then this will be my last BMW!!! I never had this problem with any other brand car I have owned in such short intervals, so it makes me wonder if they are building these cars with cheap shit now.

Also, for a weird reason, my AC smells HORRIBLE. It smells like chemicals are coming out of it and makes me dizzy. I haven't driven with the AC on for a few days. I am trying to see if maybe it was the glass cleaner I used maybe is making my car smell bad or not.
