Thinking of switching back to BMW...

Hey guys new to the forum! and i hope this isnt in the wrong section, but here goes.

I'm looking into getting a 1 series and coming from a history of cars with the recent one at 205 hp, i think the 128i would be fine for me ahaha, i dont want to test drive the 135i cause i know im going to want it LOL...

So the reason i posted in the maintenance section of the forum is because ive had alot of people tell me not to get the 2008 models... now in doing research ive found that there is mostly just the "standard" recalls that usually happen... But what else should i know?

I know from being on a few forums in the past "the search button is your best friend" ahaha but i cant pull up anything....

Past cars:

2006 Acura CSX - sold

2002- Minicooper S (car ive had the most fun in)

2007 Acura TSX- current

Im on the verge of doing the swap again to BMW but i just wanted some opinions if you guys/girls dont mind thanks!!

Cheers.

There is an ongoing N52 issue with valve lifters being noisy, in some cases a nice long drive seems to take care of it, in other cases the head had to be replaced under warranty. Since 2008's are soon coming off warranty you would want to find out if any 128 you were considering buying had any work done under warranty. Also, the 2008 model 128i automatic used a GM transmission.

Yes, the same auto as the Cadillac CTS with a V6. I like my manual better. My 2009 has had to have a recall for the seat belts (to remove insulation around a pre-tensioner, I believe) and the rear tail lights. I have a convertible and I had to have a warranty repair on the top for loose threads (they replaced the top). Engine has only had oil changes. A couple on me and a couple free ones from BMW. The free ones are about every 15,000 miles which I would be a little worried about on a used vehicle. They will also do it annually so if you find a low mileage car the oil change interval may not be so bad. 2008 and 2009 in the U. S. got the mid-level radio which has the same number and size of speakers as the top of the line system. In 2010, I think they went to the base system in the rest of the world is also base in the U. S.. In 2008 and early 2009, there was a trunk key lock outside. On my 2009 and later, the only release is inside the passenger's compartment or the remote. 2008 and 2009 also got what BMW calls the "smokers package" which includes an up-front 12V outlet. Later units got only the 12V under the arm rest. I believe 2009 is the first year for the improved iDrive.

My e36 328is auto is at 226k, and I have a personal hatred for GM and owners of them.

OP, This is a major upgrade, you may need to get your hart checked first.

I went from a 325xi to an Acura TSX to a 328xi...either way you may not be satisfied with the N52 engine in the 128. The TSX is quicker so be certain to look at MT only for the 128. I agree....dont test drive a 135i

My Wife drives a 2101 TSX and I will respectfully disagree that the engine in the 128i will disappoint you.
I personally replaced my 2004 G35 Coupe with a 2011 128i. What a difference. While the 128 lacks the power of the G35. The 128 just goes about its business of being fast without effort.
The difference in the overall "feel" of the 128i compared to the G35..... Well the G doesn't compare.

I should have bought a BMW years ago.

I don't see why anybody would find the 128i engine disappointing. It is very smooth and moves the car well. To accelerate really quickly requires keeping the rpm up (over 3,000 is my rule of thumb) but you can't accelerate that way very long before being well over any speed limit in the U. S.. It is not a 12 second quarter mile car but is a nicely quick high 14 quarter mile car. There were a lot of "muscle cars" that were slower.
