2009 135i steptronic up shifts by it self

So I though in steptronic mode you can bounce off limiter until you shift with the paddle but mine if I don't shift it automaticity up shifts for me

Also when I come to a stop it goes into gear 2 why not 1 when would you use first gear people say its best to launch in 2nd anyway?

No, if you hit red line it will automatically shift for you. I'd much rather have it shift than bounce off the rev limiter and cut power. Same applies if the RPM gets too low, it will downshift for you. The only other time it will shift for you is if you push the pedal all the way and hit the kick down button.

1st gear is practically useless with a tune but it's still fun to start in that gear sometimes. Throttle modulation becomes critical, you cant just floor it and leave your foot there.

If I do an exhaust on my car would it sound funny when it shifts like when automatic cars have an exhaust just sounds like crap when they change gears but I no the 135s change gears pretty quick with not much lag

The ZF transmission does a nice revmatch - aftermarket exhaust sounds great when shifting.

I sometimes lift my foot off the gas when shifting up. Sounds exactly like a manual

I would caution for not using 1 gear to start off on a regular basis. This WILL cause excessive wear in the tranny and thus shorten the life of the unit. My experience is that this will begin to cause tranny noise on downshift over time which sounds more like a metal rubbing noise. The short term fix for this noise is a fluid flush but the longer term fix is to rebuild the transmission.

I have and do accidentally start off in second gear from time to time but when i do I do feel a slight lag because of the missing torque from 1st gear but once i hit 5 mph that goes away.

Also I know on my e89 that there is an ECS tune that automatically downshifts to 1st gear for you because of a stalling issue that is common in that vehicle. I wonder if there is a similar code push that will do the same for the 1er.

I haven't heard this before. How do you know it was caused by starting in 2nd gear?

Starting off in 2nd I assume would wear out the clutches inside the box a bit faster than normal I assume. That's why I usually make sure to put it back in first after coming to a complete stop.
Only start off in 2nd at the drag strip because like it was said above, first gear is useless when you have a tune.

I had an E85 that i just traded for a E89, the E85 had a horrible noise after about 30K miles and a fluid flush took care of it but it was likely due to the over heating of the fluid in the tranny.

My E89 didnt downshift to 1st either. I had an ECS flash and now when i am in sport mode the tranny downshifts to 1 without a problem to prevent it from stalling when the engine is cold.

Yes but in manual it will not downshift to 1 without you slapping the gear shift forward or hitting the downshift paddle.
