Why have heater on while on track

A bunch of people have told me that they turn their heater on while on track to keep temps down. Does this really do anything and if so what and how? Thanks!

it's a means of dissipating heat through the heat exchanger. should be worth a few degrees. I've run full heat on a 100+ day. wasn't fun but I had shut the two center vents and directed the two side vents towards the open windows.

I've had it help - was going into some sort of limp mode (1/2 filled engine), but after running the heat during the next 7 sessions - no problems. Now I always run the heat during track events. I just close the center vents, and let it blow out the windows.

Around 35 years ago, I owned a little Fiat 124 Spyder that had overheating problems on hot days. It also had a little dealer-installed A/C. So on sunny days, I'd run the heater with the convertible top down, and on rainy days, I'd run the heater to cool the engine and the A/C to cool me.

Had a bmw engineer at my last event and he asked the same question..

less heat = more power.. BMW DME does wierd things.. I also run heat to passanger vent and close center vents ... no harm no foul.. seems as though it cant hurt anything ..
